Transmission replacements anyone?
I'm going to have my transmission replaced sometime next week and I'm having some jitters.
Has anyone had theirs done?
Any problems with the new tranny?
I'm talking only about 3rd Gens. I know some 2nd Gens went through more than one tranny.

This is for an Automatic '04.
All the information is contained in this thread.

Has to do with gear whine. Hasn't failed yet, but being replaced just in case.

it's whistle sound like a turbo,
and i can hear a sound that is like a vaccum sound or something rubbing against something but it's less important that the whistle sound.
It happens on cold and hot condition.
It happens after they change my air filter and for the 2nd time my rack and pinion shaft ( the thing that make your wheels turn)
Although sometimes i was able to hear it before but less, now i can hear it always
appointement to dealer on 26th december

When I called the deal a while back, they said was 'normal characteristics' of the car. I am not satisfied with that answer. I have an appointment to drop my car off tomorrow.
I'm hoping for some answers to this matter.

the same sh........ with me..took it to two different dealers for a total of 3 times..everytime they tell me it's a normal characteristis of the car..that's just bull..
one time i drove the car with the technician who heard the noise and told me it has to do with the tranny but he told me he had to tell his manager..after that the manager said, there is nothing wrong..of course..the way damn acura has been dealing with the problems ......

What year is your TL and how many miles on it? I have 28,000 miles on my car.
Yeah, that sucks...it's hard to accept 'normal characteristics' as an answer. Aside from the 'whine', the tranny shifts and acts fine.

Has the dealer actually said they ar going to replace it?- either goodwill or actual warranty?
The 04 is right after 03, which still had the exact same problem its had since the change to 5 speed from 4 in 2000
The gen2 replacement trans got ~better~ after mid 2005, but some still fail again
Same with gen3 replacemets- there is a big thread for those owners to check in- search azine
It is my GUESS- that gen2 rebuilds are testbeds for any changes and when they work - they go into regular production on the new car line.
Some changes dont work,,, and certain members have repeat failures- well someone has to be quality control for life!

Car is at the dealership now. Upon talking with the service writer, he did tell me that the 'whining' is a normal charactristic of the tranny which also exists on the MDX as well. He said that he has only had a few cars actually have a bad tranny.
Well, I guess we'll see what happens because I told that that I still wanted it looked at. I'll keep you updated.

As a former service writer- I will reveal the Golden Saying regardless of what part/car:
Its perfectly normal for this model, of this year, with these miles, to have this occur.
Its not a ~problem~, its normal wear or wearout
Most service writers (their creative nature should be obvious from the job name- WRITER)
are not TECHS - a few are- but most recite the book policy and dont know what half the jobs require, or concept of your symptoms.
See how they put 1 short line on the work order after you tell a whole description- the tech never hears from the customer- all they see is- ck brake noise- ck trans
Service Writers have no authority and the job is to sell as much as possible and forget to look up many things in your favor
Deal with the SERVICE MANAGER when you need real help on a trans problem.
Thats my insiders opinion

Picked up my car yesterday evening. Spoke with the service manager, he told me there is nothing they can do regarding the 'whining'...it's normal. He reminded me that I have 5year/60,000mi warranty on the drivetrain. I stated that as long I was in here and they have it logged in to there system that I was concerend about the 'whine'. So, if something does happen, they'll see that I've been there previously regarding that.
They did however perform the wiper motor recall and replace the battery under warrranty which failed during there inspection tests.

Tranny just replaced at 43K
Hi guys:
My transmission was just replaced on my '05 AT TL due to a vibration/shudder in the pedal and steering under very light acceleration between 3rd and 4th gear. The dealer had the car ready in 3 days.
Picked it up the car this Wednesday and tranny seems OK, but the alignment of the car was all messed up. Took it back Thursday morning and they aligned the car free of charge.
Any ideas why replacing the tranny would mess up the alignment?
Also, I do have long term concerns as I had planned on keeping the car. They only gave me a warranty of 1 year/12K miles on the new transmission.
Is that what everyone else is getting, and are my concerns valid?
I'm planning on driving and monitoring the car between now and the end of year. If problems do not arise I'll keep it as planned; and, if not will sell and shy away from another Acura that's for sure!
