Transmission popped - what happened?

was out driving around, pulled up to my driveway and put it in reverse, started to back up and heard (and felt) a loud pop and then nothing. I first thought it popped out of gear and so I just put it back in reverse and tried again and nothing. The clutch pedal feels normal but there is absolutely nothing transferring to the wheels. So I tried first gear and the same, nothing! I tried other gears and nothing there either. Clutch pedal felt fine and shifting felt fine. it was then I realized that I could put it in any gear while the car was running without even pushing in the clutch. it was as if I had the clutch pedal pushed all the way in the whole time. No grinding sounds or anything. I kept trying different things including shutting the car down and restarting and continue shifting trying different gears when suddenly it wouldn't go into 5th gear. I tried a couple of more times and it went back in and I could hear a very quiet spinning sound that sounded like it was coming from the transmission. The sound would go away if I pushed in the clutch and come back when I would disengage the clutch. I am baffled at what is going on. it doesn't make sense that everything feels normal and I can shift gears while the car is running. Its like the clutch is stuck disengaged. I can logic it being stuck engaged but not the other way around. I think there is something to learn from the 5th gear situation I described above but its not helping me. Any ideas what's going on and how I can diagnose this. BTW - original trans with 236K miles. Pressure plate, clutch and bearing replaced at 155K. They were not wore out but I had the transmission off at the time and so I just replaced them.

I believe if you didn't replace your flywheel, it may have torn up your new clutch. I believe member DMZ had that happen.

You have any symptoms prior to this happening? No bearing noise or vibration? Also, where on the shaft did it snap? Any pics? Thanks, Sam

no symptoms at all. just got home (lucky) after driving around for about 45 minutes. Was backing up very slowly, letting the clutch out very slowly when it "popped". here are a couple of pics showing where it sheared.

I just had the same thing happen.

Was in Drive, then about to make a left turn and then POP... vroooom... but not going anywhere.

Luckily some nice dudes were able to push me to a parking spot in my building.

The engine was spinning but my shifter wouldn't engage. While I was pressing the gas, i could hear something rotate and go clunk clunk in tune with accerator.

I hope it's just a half shaft or something minor.

Looks like corrosion caused the shaft to weaken under the damper. Lots of salt on the roads during winter in Michigan.
