Transmission overheated still can drive

So 3 hours away from home my 06 TL trans fluid spewed out on driver side and got everywhere and can bearly drive if not at all. Fluid is black almost and smells burnt obviously. If I let cool down it can drive but not for long. Is the trans shit or should I try taking the car to get trans fluid service?

If you drove it to the point where something burst/overheated, you're probably past the point of salvaging it.

If you lost fluid, why would you try to keep driving it...? That would 100% make things worse. Changing the fluid isn't going to reverse any of the damage done.... I would start looking for a new transmission.

When the transmission stops working, you stop moving. First step is to check the fluid to see condition. In your case it spewed out due to overheating. Time to STOP driving and get it towed. More than likely the damage is already done....but some basic maintenance may have gotten it to limp along a bit longer. The fact you kept driving and overheating the fluid, you probably finished it off.

Start a machine with bunch of metal pieces inside with NO fluid or oil, machine overheats even worse -> completely toasted.
