Transmission flares after changing ATF

Hey,

I've changed my ATF and I noticed immediately after changing it, the transmission flares, usually going from 3-4 but I've noticed its done it going from 2-3.

The old fluid which I only changed in the winter was still really pink and clear.

I used Honda DW1, and have been for the past 3 years.

Would it be because I put too much or too little?
I know the dipstick tells you, but since I fill using the dipstick hole, whenever I read the dipstick the whole thing is usually coated in liquid unlike the engine oil dipstick.

Thanks

I asked the same question in my thread, and didn't get a solid answer. I thought it could possibly mess with the pressure inside the tranny, but I'm not a tranny expert so I have no clue. I experienced flares and a shudder now from 1st to 2nd after doing my last drain and fill with Redline D4. I did notice that the fluid was a bit above the second dot.

You fill your transmission through the dipstick? I've never heard of that before. I guess just let it settle and check it again? This weekend I'm going to do a 1x3 with DW-1 and add some lubeguard in there to see if it helps at all.

I'll be draining some out tomorrow, then.

How do I tell if the fluid level is too high?

Is it when the dot is filled with liquid?

The fluid should top between the two dots on the dip stick. Pull the dip stick out wipe it off, put it back in (thats what she said) pull it out and then angle it in some kind of light to see where the highest point of the fluid touches on the dip stick. If it's above the two dots its too high.

why do you fill through the dipstick?

because you have the oil jet??

I do too... it comes off with a 10 (i think) and a 8 inch extender on your ratchet... gotta remove the bolt on the fuse box and move it ever so slightly, then you hang the oil jet and you are ready to rock in the fill hole....

I'm sure Redline will get blamed even though this is a DW-1 thread lol.

The trans has a pump that supplies pressure with a pickup in the sump. Fluid level does not affect pressure unless it's so low it cavitates from sucking air or it's so full it aerates the fluid. If you're not seeing bubbles you're probably ok. I run mine just above the second dot.

Sometimes just changing the fluid on a high mileage transmission can cause issues. If the dipstick is just coated with oil, let it sit for a few minutes and find out for sure where the level is at before worrying. I wouldn't drive it with it flaring until you figure out if it's just the level or not.

I went to the Honda dealership and they checked the dipstick and said the level is good.

Last time I did a drain and refill, I put in all 3 bottles of DW1.

This time, I left a bit from the third bottle.
I'm thinking of putting that extra bit in, and then drive and see if it still flares.

EDIT: just checked thatI only left 50 mL left in the third bottle
