Power Steering pump whine

Hey folks,

Been a while since I've posted anything but I've just been enjoying my car lately.

Recently I had my car in to get the Clutch replaced by an Acura Tech whose done a lot of side work for me in the past.

When I got the car back everything seemed fine. He commented that I was getting a whining noise from my Drive belt tensioner. He said it was a common problem. I had noticed the whining before the clutch as well and wanted to get it fixed. Bought a new OEM drivebelt tensioner for 90$, paid 65$ for the install which I thought was fair since I don't have the time these days to work on it myself.

After I got it back, he showed me the old tensioner and said it was in bad shape, that it wasn't providing the right amount of tension etc. He said that now that the replacement part is providing the proper tension on the belt, it seems that the whine is coming from the power steering pump itself and he recommends replacing the pump.

The noise gets more apparent during acceleration and increases with increased RPM. Its certainly not loud or embarrassing and its definitely not the common o-ring problem we all already know about.

Anyone know of a quality aftermarket PS pump? Would rebuilding it with all the other new O-rings like in the DIY solve my problem?

Yes, guaranteed. Spend $15 on some o rings and you'll be fine. I've done this on multiple Hondas and acuras

louder when accelerating and turning, sounds like a bad pump. $400 for oem, $160 for aftermarket refurb with core return....

easy fix. you dont even have to fully remove the serpentine belt to do the fix. I would do that myself if i were you. Its all right at the top of the engine bay and very accessible.

Yeah, but its louder with acceleration, not necessarily on turns though thats why I'm questioning it a little bit, I really thought it was the drive belt tensioner and now I'm not so sure.

My buddy has a spare pump that he never sent in as a core so maybe I'll try to refurb that myself and pop it in!

This happened to me over winter(louder with acceleration)
My fluid was a touch low!
I turkey baster the old fluid out of the reservoir and put in fresh honda fluid.
Never heard it again
Good luck
