Transmission Diagnosis

Hey Guys,

I have another account on here but its been so long since I have logged in I cannot remember my username or password but im not new to the forum, anyways.

The vehicle:
2007 TL Type-S Automatic
180,000 Miles
No mechanical Mods

The problem:
The car was shifted into drive at about 4,500 RPM's... Doesnt matter the reason but thats what happened.
The car I assume attempted to shift into gear and there was a loud bang and the vehicle lurched forward about a foot and that was the last time it moved on its own. I am thinking that the entire transmission is shot and it was destroyed on the inside. I consider myself decent with being able to diagnose issues but TBH i know nothing about transmission expect they are expensive and complicated. Before I replace the entire trans I would like some input on what could be the issue and if it was something easier such as the shift cable, pump, sensor, or something else.

What the vehicle does now:
It will go from park into drive on the shifter and once in drive it will make a brief grinding sound like the gears are almost lining up but not catching each other. The car will not catch any gears, reverse, drive, low, first or second. Also the vehicle cannot be started in an other position but park. Once the car is started and out of park and in the drive position I have to shut the car off to shift it back in park because the shifter will get stuck in the neutral position. No matter what the position on the shifter the car always acts as if it is in neutral and I can push it. There is not metal in the fluid. Also if I rev the engine in drive the RPM's will respond appropriately but what is weird is that the MPH will go up as well.

If you have any suggestions on what to look for or diagnosis ideas by all means please let me know. I can get a transmission for $650 and have it installed for 400-600 minus the fluid. But money saved is money saved.

Thank you all, and if you have any questions I need to answer I will check periodically.

Okay, I will.

Where and what should I be looking for in relation to the axels them selves?

It sounds like one of them broke; typically the damage is obvious as one end is hanging down.

As for the "where", the axles are the rotating shafts which run between the transaxle and the two front wheels.

So I had my roommate help me with the car some. I was able to look where the shift cable enters the transmission and had him shift into gear to see if the cable was moving/bent/function properly and it was. Made the grinding noise again (nearly went deaf) so its safe to assume I ripped somethin to sheds inside of the case. Found a trans for $407 with the $75 core charge. So I guess thats what im going to do. Im going to keep the core to take it apart and see whats going on in there and how it works. Thank you for your help.
