Unhappy Trans Failure..

My trans decided to die on me today on my way home from work. I was on the fwy and all of a sudden is downshifted and then felt like it was in neutral. Had to turn the car off and back on every mile or 2 just to limp it back home.

No CEL or anything warning me of a problem. < Is that what usually happens when the trans goes out?

Another thing is that I changed my mounts and passenger axle yesterday and driving it around afterward it was completely fine.. could the axle not being seated all the way into the trans cause this?

Sorry to hear this. Take the car to the stealer and hopefully they'll goodwill part of the repair bill.

I'd also recommend that you change out the tranny fluid on a regular basis from now on, and also change out the 3rd & 4th gear pressure switches.

Bought my car used from a 3rd party, it has a couple mods, and 96k.. anyone know what are my chances of getting it or part of it goodwilled.

...also Redline Racing ATF and the pressure switches were next on my to-do list...

If you have gotten the car serviced at the dealership and have proof that you have done normal trans maintance they may cover a decent amount of it. In my case I have/has 3 Acura vehicles and 1 new honda in the past few years and gotten them all serviced at the same dealerships before it was due. Honda asked me to pay the shipping+ tax and they'd cover the rest since I had to get the 105k service done at the same time.

Talk to them and see what happens. Good Luck

I agree with CSMEANACE. I had a 2003 TL with 99,200 miles on it when the transmission started to fail. B/C I had it serviced at the dealership at regular intervals, the dealership paid for a brand new transmission and all the install (about $4,500). It is definitely worth the little extra money to get it serviced at the dealership, especially if you beat on your cars.

Did you check the obvious such as fluid level and condition? Its possible the new axle was leaking and you were just low on fluid. The dealer does not diagnose trans problems, they only replace. If there are no trans failure codes they will probably come up with some lame theories and eventually replace the trans after wasting some time.

I checked the ATF level and it was fine.

I spoke to the dealer and they said to tow it there with my receipts of maintenance and then MAYBE corp will goodwill some of it. I never kept my receipts of when I bought basic maintenance stuff like ATF-Z1, damnit.

What do you guys think about getting it rebuilt at a reputable transmission shop and then running Racing ATF from there on?

I would try the dealer first just to see if they will give you a break. If not, an independent is fine but shop around carefully. Try to find one that does a lot of Hondas if possible. Definitely run the racing fluid once it's rebuilt.
