Tranny Slippin on the 2-3 shift w/Redline Racing ATF

Thinking about how it drove, I noticed that 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th gear changes felt nice and quick, the shift into 3rd has a tiny flare to it, like maybe 50-100 RPM's if that much. I just could notice a nice quick drop in the RPM's on every other gear.
Thoughts? I will call and confirm the pressure switches were changed.

Glad you noticed that too, I was like WTF really!
Hey kingkong_dav, Acura only recommends their fluid, I have yet to see them mentioned using any thing else. Plus the service guy mentioned that if something else was used other than the Z1 or now their new DW-1 it may cause an issue. So I highly doubt acura would say try the GM fluid.

They started replacing a bunch of 3rd gear synchros before figuring out that GM synchromesh FM solved the issue of 6MT 3rd gear grinds. I'm willing to bet most 6MT's on the road are running GMSFM.

It's also a testament that OE fluids aren't always, nor usually the best fluid to use. I understand your worries OP, but I would try it again.. you have a fresh 3 year / 36k mile warranty. I'm willing to bet that no matter what fluid you changed it to, your tranny was gong to eat it after your initial 3x3.

Well Infiniti only wanted to give me 17K for my car today, so looks like D4 is going in tomorrow!
The guy was a prick today, totally didn't want to deal with me on the G37, he just totally didn't want to make the sale.

Don't feel bad, I was looking at CTS-Vs a while ago and they offered 7K for mine.

Yeah, when he said someone would want to buy it for only 19, I'm like it shows about 23.6K for dealer sale. Don't play me for a fool, I wasn't born yesterday. Plus I went in with the research under my belt!

Ok, last update on the tranny for now. So far about 240 miles on the tranny and still going fine. Looks like I'm gonna keep the car for a while, so I'm going to look into changing out the tranny fluid to D4. I'm gonna have to look into doing the tranny cooler line fluid flush. I believe I saw 2 lines running to the front of the car from the tranny so I assume those are the two lines. I will research that a bit further.

I've changed all 3 pressure sensors, and have performed a 3x1 of the 4 planned. Its been about 2 mo/4k miles since.
Is this worth taking to the dealer for a possible trans replacement? Sitting at 64k miles

this is what I'm experiencing now in our 07 base. Not much flare really, it just sort of hangs in 2nd gear before going into 3rd. All other shifts are quick and perfect.

This fluid (Type F) is not meant for our cars, Ive spoken with the makers of the fluid themselves and they also concur and state NOT TO PUT IT IN YOUR CAR as it will cause harsher shifting and the lunging feeling, and even possibly lock up the torque box.
No matter how you slice it, or what anyone on the internet says, sacrificing smooth shifting for an "unknown" or "proven" amount of reduced wear is not worth the issues your now having....... Think of the flip side, when the car is brand new does it lunge or slip? NO.... sure less FM might save you some wear and tear, but what do you think the effects of the slipping and lunging will do to your trans over time........ food for thought.
Ive personally gone back and fourth about putting in Type F, and the unofficial evidence is not nearly convincing enough, coupled with multiple threads like this, Ill deal with a few shavings on my oil plug and easy shifts.... either way its a the lesser of two evils.. cars dont last forever and anyway you slice the apple.... wear and tear will occur.

Also when I took the car into the dealer for the tranny I pointed out the face that that black plate that covers what I think is the torque converter, has a film of oil on it. I haven't taken the plate off, to see if there is any fluid residue under there. So I pointed that out to them, he stated if the tech did see anything they would fix it. Well nothing was fixed, but I still see the fluid.
Thoughts on what this could be, I have a pic on my phone which I will have to upload later.

Damn how the hell did your transmission go out in just 44.5K miles? I got an 07, currently with 2x3 of Amsoil Supershift (type F) at 56K and it is going fine so far.
I ordered two 3rd pressure switch and 1 4th pressure switch today and thinking of having them replaced once I get it.
I really wonder if your transmission just went bad at the same time you switched your fluid, or did the fluid cause the issue. Sounds like you had a bad tranny. 44K seems way too low.

So since each of the 2 drain and fills I have done have taken 3.5 - 3.75 quarts of fluid, I'm gonna go have to buy some more before I can do my 3rd and then 4th D&F w/D4.
With my break in fluid coming out, I think I like the day between D&F's as the plug is getting crap on it which thankfully is getting out of my tranny!

If you are getting wear on the plug, then change your transmission filter on a 2004-2006. Just imagine how much is in there... Mine was pretty well plugged up when I changed it.

i have the exact same symptoms as you. theres a ~500 rpm jump from 2nd to 3rd gear shift only. so sad....and im at 82k miles, dealers arent even willing to work with me cuz im only 21, maybe they think 21 year olds dont deserve a TL-S.

So update, the tranny has 1.6K on it now. I just did my 3rd D&F with the D4 fluid. All good so far.
On a side note, I had a bit of oil, not sure which type, didn't really have a smell to it. Thought it looks more colored like motor oil. But I found this coming from that little plate that covers, what I believe is the torque converter. When I did my last D&F about 600 miles ago, I cleaned off this entire area with Brake Clean, and last night when I changed the fluid I found the light oil residue.
Now I told the dealer about this when they changed the tranny out, they said if they found that something was leaking the mechanic would tell him and they would fix it. Well it obviously leaks, but if they saw it they didn't fix it.
Now my engine oil level never changes between my 5K change interval. But I did notice after I put in Type-F fluid initially that it appeared to loose fluid after 3K put on it. Could the torque converter leak?

AVB for President!
So I just ordered the Type F, but now after hearing this story, I'm inclined to order the D4 instead. I haven't installed (or even opened) the Type F fluid, so I guess I can return it, less the shipping costs.
I know D4 has some FMs in it, but it appears that people are having success with this fluid, especially compared to the Z1.
What do you guys think?

ONE OTHER REPORTED CASE
It is plausible that having too little FM had caused one Acurazine member to have his trans replaced due to flaring (click here). This one person might had experienced the flaring due to manufacturing tolerances. That is, he may have had a clutch pack with too little clearance (compared to a typical TL) and caused excessive drag when combined with the reduced FM. If so, reducing the percentage of Racing ATF, or reverting back to Z1, would had eliminated the flaring.
Thanks for pointing this out to me!!!
