Tranny Leak

Well I was cleaning my garage this weekend when I noticed tranny fluid underneath my TLS. I got under the car and noticed that the plastic cover under the tranny was wet. I checked it out and its definetely tranny fluid. Its an 07 with 7,600 miles on it and I've had it since new.

I have an appointment with the dealer tomorrow. I'll keep everyone posted on what the outcome is.

Well I just got a call from the dealer and they are unable to find the source of the tranny leak. Instead, they degreased the engine bay, told me to drive it for a week and then return it. Hopefully they’ll be able to locate the source of the leak. Not sure why they just can take it out for a 10 mile drive right now, put it up on the rack and see if they can locate the leak.

They did give me a 2009 TL with the tech package as a loaner. Nice car to drive, inside layout is a bit busy, but the navi/radio stack is fairly intuitive. The tech package rocks. In fact, I spent my lunch hour sitting on the car and playing with it. It handles well, but certainly is not as fast as the TLS (I’ve got no mods). Don’t get me wrong, its quick, just not as quick as the TLS. I can’t imagine how some on the 4th gen board are claiming 0-60 times in the low 5’s. Maybe low to mid 6’s. The front beak isn’t as bad as I thought, but the ass is just plane ugly. Looks like a cross between a Saturn and a snow shovel. A nice car, just not my cup of tea.

So, I’ll give you all an update next week when I return my car for a second look at the tranny.

Bad news - I dropped the TLS off today for the second look at the tranny and I just got a call from the dealer saying that it needs to be replaced. Apparently a seal is leaking and the only course of action is a tranny replacement. I was told that I would be receiving a new tranny as opposed to a rebuilt.

I'm kind of disappointed. I thought Acura got their act together with these 5AT's back in 05. Anyone else having this same issue?

Mistakes happen, or it could just be a poor manufactured part from a contractor. Acura corporate will investigate the reason and go from there. Certainly not Acura quality, but years ago the wife’s Z-24 had the trans replaced at 280 miles and never a problem again, the car was sold at 160K. Our 2008 Kia Optima knock around car, had the trans replaced at 1,600 miles, no other problems and now with 27K.

It’s annoying, but not unheard of.

leaking seal.. did they overfill? What was your ATF level at? Have them check out your engine and transmission mounts as well.

Yep, I have a 2006 and noticed the undercover had some ATF all over it and the AT pan had ATF on it. At the time, I was about to change the ATF and didn't want to touch it until the dealer took a look.

It wasn't a lot of fluid, but was concerning since my car had just 20k on it at the time. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't find? a leak at the time. Sure enough when I changed the ATF it still showed a slight leak. I cleaned the cover. Guess it's time to see how much it's leaking. I'll know at least that the AT wasn't over-filled so that won't be a reason for any leak.

The undercover looks like a means of catching leaks so you don't notice them on the driveway?

No overfill. I checked the tranny fluid a couple of times before I even noticed the leak and all was well. I'm assuming they'll check the mounts since they have to yank the engine inorder to remove the tranny (right?).

My only hope is that they get this thing back together correctly.

They don't need to drop the engine but they do need to support it and remove it from at least the front & side mount because they drop the lower subframe to remove & install the transmission. If they notice anything they should let you know. I remember another member having a hairline crack in the case causing a leak.. it's still a mystery how it happened.. you guys could just be in that delta of case failure.
