Too much oil in engine?

I carried my car to get the oil changed yesterday. This guy always has done a good job and I've known him for years. This is the first time he has changed oil in this car (07TLS) so I told him it took 4.5 qts. I told him I would drive it home and let it sit overnight and add some if needed. I noticed that about 80% of the last qt was used once I got home. He said to let it settle and check it in the morning. OK, this morning it is over the full mark so is this little extra going to hurt anything? If so, can I drain it a little without having to replace the washer on the plug?

You must be very strong to have "carried my car to get the oil changed yesterday". (heh, heh) You know someone was not going to let that one slip by.

If it is just a little (slightly) over the full line, you're Ok. If, on the other hand, he had put in 6+ quarts, I'd be concerned.

Just do a 2 or 4 count drop on the oil. you should be fine but I guess the question is how much oil did he actually put in??

I just got back on my workout program and wanted to start with something light.

I gave him 5 qts and told him to put in 4.5qts. I had read where some have said it was 4.7qts with new filter. I waited on it in the shop while talking with others. So I know it was less than 5 but the last bottle has around 20% left instead of the 50% it should have had left in it.

^ u will be fine if its just a little bit over the full mark ... i personally dont think even a complete 5 quarts will be that harmful, but wouldn't recommend it ...

Up to 5 quarts is ok, adding any more will cause the oil to start foaming!

Good. I was getting ready to go jack it up and drain some to be on the safe side.

I tried to post a pic for you but I'm having no luck. The nose of the car is slightly downhill and the oil comes to the 'A' mark on the dipstick where it says RGA. Its less than 5qts so I say the heck with it, it should be ok.

I actually put a full 5 quarts in for every oil change. You're going to be fine!

Our engines use a windage tray in the crankcase so you would have to put in enough oil to overflow that tray where it might then be contacted by the crankshaft before you would experience the potential of foaming.

Ok don't do what my dumb ass did!! I put about a quart and a half to much in when I changed my oil the other day and I didn't drain it for about four days or so the car ran great and I hope i didn't do any long term damage.

For some reason I thought I would be able to pull the drain plug and let it drain out a little bit but WTF was I thinking the engine was still hot so when I went to pull the plug the freaking oil was scolding hot and I wasn't able to plug it back so all the oil poured out. What a freaking waste.. 70$ bucks wasted and a trip back to pepboys. Lesson learned!! The only good thing that came of this was two oil changes in a week.lol.

True. You would probably have to have 7+ quarts to begin worrying. I always put 5 quarts in mine in the summer and I've put 5.5 quarts in when it was being used to go between Phoenix and Vegas regularly. It's probably fruitless but my reasoning is factory recommendation in the winter for slightly faster warmup and more in the summer heat for a slightly cooler sump temp. The extra oil may just prolong how long it takes to get to full temp but in my other car I've seen the oil run a few degrees cooler with the extra capacity.

There's always that possibility. You don't really have to worry about anything unless the level can slosh up to the front or rear main seals. I don't suggest to anyone to do what I do with the 5.5 quarts, that's for sure. For the first month I kept an eye on the oil daily to make sure there was no foaming. Nothing at all wrong with 5 quarts though.
