TL-S Will Not Shift Out of Park

Hello All,

A few days ago I was leaving to head out to the airport and when I started my car, put my foot on the brake and went to shift out of Park I noticed that the lock was not disengaging to let me change gears on the shifter (it is an automatic transmission). I found this odd so I started to push and release the break pedal and fiddle around with the shifter moving it back and forth and eventually it was able to move. The next day it was ok. The day after that it started to do it again, and after more fiddling around than the first time it eventually allowed me to change gears

I went to use the car yesterday and it won't release the lock at all now. I've tried turning the car off and then on again and it won't release the shifter lock. I've tried turning the wheel in different directions but also to no avail. I tried it again this morning and still the same issue.

Has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone know how to fix it because I can't use the car at the moment.

Thank you for your assistance in advance.

A similar issue happened to my friend and it was because the brake switch broke. Step on the brake and have someone go see if the lights come on. If it doesn't you'll need to replace the switch in the driver's side footwell.

You can still use the car.
See the hole on the left?

That's the shift lock release. Pry the cover with a finger nail or a small screw driver covered with a cloth, insert your key in it and move your shifter to N. Remove the key then start the car.

Here's the troubleshooting steps for the shift lock solenoid.

ok so I went out and checked and my brake lights do come on when I press the break pedal.

Polobunny that is an excellent post. Pardon my ignorance but on Step 2 I don't know what an HDS and DLC is so I don't know what to do for that step. So if you could let me know what that is I would appreciate it.

Polo is all over this -

HDS = Honda Diagnostic System

DLC = Data Link Connector

Essentially this is asking you to connect Honda's Diagnostic system to the OBD port to read trouble codes.

So will a regular ODB sensor work to detect the information?

I would skip those HDS parts. Do as much diagnosing as you can without the part that necessitate special hardware/software. Most important steps are 1 then 4 to 9. Most likely shift lock solenoid isn't working, hence why I uploaded page 14-250.

Would you mind uploading the pages that show how to remove the centre console because I'm not quite sure how to do that.

Thanks for all your help!
