TL Muffler Black Powercoating Chipping Away?

I have an 06 TL with 4000 miles on it. The black powercoating on the mufflers started to chip away, both left and right. I went to the dealer and they replaced the whole exhaust system since the passenger side muffler is a one piece from the catalytic converter and on. This was all under warranty. Have any of you experienced this? I had the same problem on my 2000 Honda Prelude and the dealer replaced my muffler under warranty too.

I would say it is normal. My '06 did the same thing. I seen pictures here on the forum where I could see that their muffler was flaking off too. So, I would say it happens to all TL's. Plus, I really doubt that it is a true powder coating. It is probably a flat black paint.

I'm noticing this now, I think i'm going to see if i can't get it replaced. I've also noticed what seems to be a hiss that sounds like a tiny exhaust leak. we'll see what they say at 8am when i show up after work. My concern especially being in canada where they salt the hell out of the roads is that, while the coating is gone now and everything is fine, after the winter the whole thing could be rusted out and i'll be out of warranty.

Should be stainless. My assumption would be that it is at least 409 stainless because all exhaust systems in the US have to basically last 7 years. I understand that may not be the case with you, but i doubt highly that there is too much a difference!

Anyhow, if it is stainless, a light wire brush will strip any rust that hasnt penetrated, and you should be able to pull the mufflers off and paint them black again. If you do run out of warranty, just pick up some "high temp" it isnt necessary, but it will most likely last longer.

Good luck
take care

Yes, it is cosmetic problem, get those suck3rs fix it right. So the paint peels off, body rusted, is cosmetic too? Throw the hood, and trunk lid away is also just cosmetic. Sounds like if the car still runs, everything else to them is just costmetic. I have seen those mufflers with the paint peeled off around the tips, they look ugly. It looks like the car has been through a winter with salt damaged. Those bad suck3rs are just ruining the acura reputation. Bad Service.

I washed and sanded each muffler to get enough loose stuff off, then washed and dried real good. I taped everything off and gave them 3 thin coats. It won't last a long time, but its not hard to do it each summer in less then an hour. I like doing things like this. I detail areas MOST people NEVER think of cleaning/detailing. Keeps the car looking like it JUST came off the showroom floor.
Many people see my car and say "Nice NEW car" Thankyou

JUS DO IT

Do you have to remove the muffler? Or did you just crawl under there and go for it? Is that a spray paint? And- what did you use to mask off the surrounding area?

Appreciate any suggestions- I have the same issue and it has really been bugging me-

I left the mufflers on, don't need to paint the top. Lightly sanded down all the visable areas, cleaned and dryed, and taped all around with 2" masking tape. It was a 90 degree day with no wind. I used 1000 degree semi gloss spray paint. Ace Hardware. Did everything in 1 hour.

I just put down a big piece of corrugated board to lay on and go to work.

Couldn't wait to take my 2nd shower. MAN it was hot out.
