TL 2008 issue

I bought used Acura TL 2008 from Acura dealer. While driving for two days, I feel a vibration in gas pedal along with a feeling that something is resisting against it, when rpm goes to 2000. Also, vibration is felt on dashboard and speedometer area. During my test drive, I mentioned it to dealer but he said everything is ok.

The other issue I noted is the little jerk I felt when shifting gear down. This happen when it shift gear down to 2nd and first.

Is this concerning and should I return the car back, as I have 7 days to return it if I find any issue and don't feel comfortable.

I was driving Accord 2007 before and it was a smooth drive, never felt vibration and jerk in that. I think TL 2008 is little rough in driving. Not sure if this is a car issue or TL is like that.

strange.
Can you tell us more about the issue?
details are most useful.
is the car Auto? or manual?
do you only feel the vibrations at 2k RPM?
does it go away after you pass 2k?
does the car accelerate normally to you?(I understand that this is the first TL you've ever driven.)

Does the vibration come with a noise?

Thanks for the reply.

Transmission is Automatic and has 65000 km. Vibration comes at 2000 rpm and it goes away when I pass it. The car accelerate normal and the vibration do come with noise.

The Vib. comes with a noise...
can you describe this noise?
does the noise increase or get faster with speed?

There is a TSB on a heatshield that rattles against something at 2k RPM.

oh sorry, you are right. I must be in 3G section. Should I start a new thread there?

The noise does not increase if I increase the speed. Its like a slight grrrrrrrrrr type of voice at 2k rpm.

And I was also concerned about a little jerk while shifting gear down to 2 and 1. That seems a transmission issue to me but not sure.

This thread will get moved to the proper location, no need to make a new one.

I cant comment on the tran. issue as I have a 6MT.

it sounds like its the heatshield thats rubbing up against somehting. causing a vibration like noise. although, ive never felt it in my pedal.

There is a TSB on it. TSB = Technical Service Bulletin written by Acura.
Take it to the dealer and ask them to fix the heatshield, if even thats the case.

I also have never felt the vibration in the dash.
I can only hear something vibrating at 2kRPM, and it sounds like a BRRR or a GRR sound

Thank you. I will take it to the dealer and have it checked.

But even if this can be fixed, I am concerned about the gear jerk.

A car is a big investment.
have it checked out by an independent mechanic.

Drive other TL's so that you can get a feel for how a normal one drives.

Today, I took the car to Acura dealer and after driven by the mechanic there, he confirmed that there is a transmission problem and it might need to be replaced.

It's too bad that an Acura dealer has sold such a car to me. When I talked to the manager, he said he can replace the transmission and it would be brand new. Why should I take a car which is defective. The car is expensive and I am almost paying for a new car. Now they have given me temporary car to drive until they check it.

Shouldn't I ask them to refund my money? How can I trust such a dealer. I did asked them that I will lease a new TSX but not a used one now.

CANNOT TRUST DEALER NOW.

Personally I'd take a car with a new transmission and now in my head that it's one less thing to fail down the road since it's brand new.

Thanks for your reply but the question is, why I should take that car which has transmission replaced which I think whole engine to be opened. Shouldn't I get a new TSX 2011 model instead of going with a 2008 TL and replaced transmission and paying almost same monthly amount?

Personally, I'd take a Brand new TSX if the payment was the same to BUY and not lease. Remember the TL is an asset you will own at the end of your payment period. You are paying to "borrow" the TSX if you lease it.

Also the whole engine doesn't need to be taken apart to get to the transmission, the car is put on a lift and it comes from out from the bottom of the car. If you do get a new transmission, acura will warranty the work for 3 years, 36 thousand miles as well.

Just remember you could go out and buy another TL for the same price, however you won't know the condition of the transmission and when it might fail. At least with this one you know that it's brand new and has a warranty on it.

I got a 2008 TL w 26K miles on it and it runs great. There were some minor interior issues, but the dealer fixed all of them. However, you're dealing with mechanical issues, which can lead to major issues. If the tranny is bad...then you can assume that the past owner abused it. My opinion is to pass on this TL and get another one. If you do lease a TSX...get the V6 model.

I most probably will go with V4. Any specific reasons you are mentioning V6 TSX?

Also, I would like to get opinions about TSX and Accord. Accord is cheaper and the same like car but I know TSX is a higher end Accord. The new accord model coming late this year is just like TSX in exterior. I am confused and thinking that I should have waited.

The I4 in the TSX is going to be noticeably slower than the V6 in the TL. Add onto that that the new TSX is almost as big as the 3G (2004-2008) TL and you have an even slower car than the TL.

Even if the past owner abused the TL, the transmission which is the biggest problem is replaced then what's to worry about? Oil in the TL can be stretched quite a bit before it becomes a problem, and with the car being an 08 it's fairly new.

^ I have to agree. Stick with the TL---its a better car overall.
As far as the previous owner not taking care of it---pssh. The 2G & 3G TLs have known weaknesses in the transmissions. Members of these forums have found the issues related to the crappy Z1 transmission fluid and the 3rd/4th gear switches. Let the dealer put the new tranny in, then replace the fluid with a good synthetic brand. Tell the dealer you want new switches on the new transmission, too.
It seems to me this dealership is taking care of you by recognizing the problem and promptly fixing it. I'm not sure why you feel you cannot trust them.

I mentioned the V6 because when I was test driving cars the TSX 4banger didn't have enough power. With the V6 you get the power and a lighter car. The Accord was also on my list, but I prefer the Acura line.

Yes, Honda does make cars that last a long time...I put 200K+ on my 95Integ and the kid I sold too is still winning races. But if the past owner abused the car like my friends...it's a rebulit engine and stuck with parts ready to replace.

The dealer said its a mount issue but when their mechanic drove, he mentioned it might be a transmission issue. Now they are telling me different story.

I don't want to trust them anymore. Buy a new car from dealer but never go for a used one from them.
