Timing Belt, Water Pump Question

Quick question... I just bought an 06 TL w/ 106k miles from a dealership. They agreed to throw in the TB/WP change for "free" as part of the negotiation but nothing else. However in speaking with the service dept they said they wouldn't charge me anything to put in the tensioner, idler pulley and adjuster if I provided the parts "because they have to take the old ones off to do the job anyway."

So that being the case, is there anything else I should purchase to have them install during the job since they aren't charging labor for it? Obviously has to be somewhat related to the TB/WP job since that's the reason they aren't charging extra labor.

Thanks,
Chris

Ask if they are providing the drive belt (serpentine) as well- the only thing you may want to add is the drive belt adjuster assembly (I think I paid $118 from OEMAcuraparts.com). I would agree that doing the adjuster, tensioner and idler for the TB is a good idea- might as well do it all at once as long as they're in there. Consider a thermostat as well while the coolant is drained- for that they'll probably charge extra but it's worth getting done. Then you're good for the next 100K miles- the spark plugs you can do yourself if you want.

I'll check on those, thanks. I actually already bought the drive belt to do on my own but if they aren't going to charge me labor I'll just have them do it.

go to hamilton honda in NJ for your timing belt change but
call them first to make sure the deal still applies to the TL.

1. belt(timing AND accessory. while you're in there)
2. water pump assembly
3. hydraulic adjuster
4. Valve adjustment.
5. hydraulic adjuster (tensioner) pulley
6. idler pulley
7. cam oil seals (front and back)
8. crank oil seal
9. tensioner pulley
10 New Spark Plugs
11. Spark Plug Tube Seals
12. Transmission Fluid Flush
13. Power Steering Fluid Flush
14. Brake Fluid flush (every 2-3 years)
15. New Filters (cabin and engine but you can do these yourself and save $$$)

IMO with the above you should have no issues reaching 200K miles.

Hello Fellow Acuraziners,

I too bought a 2008 Acura TL with 77,500 miles on it. Some dealers say that it is recommended to change the Timing Belt, Water pump, etc at 7 years or 105,000 miles, whichever is first. With your experiences with the car, what do you guys suggest? Do I change them in 2015 (7 yr mark) or wait till I get close to 105k mile mark? Any help is appreciated.

In all honesty I would say it's really more like 10 years or 105K miles. Many members have gone over 105K on the factory belt but I wouldn't take the risk personally. I had mine done at 100K and 7 years and it looked in pretty decent shape still.

Read your owner's manual. There is no mileage or time limit anymore. It's due when a "4" shows up on the MID. And this question has been asked and answered literally 100's of times on this forum....

This thread was jacked 3 different times.

As for the time limit, chances are it's not listed because the MID tells you when. Just like oil changes. Some don't mention a time interval but it's common sense and common practice that the oil gets replaced once a year if the mileage limit isn't reached. The timing belt will not last forever regardless of how low the mileage is. It used to be 7 years for a lot of Honda products and then the MID came along. If in doubt the 105k/7yr interval is good practice but that's totally up to the owner.

Do a search for the other 50 threads on this topic.

Yeah crazy. I lost track!

Anyway as an update the service guy said he wouldn't charge labor for the drive belt or tstat either. I ended up buying all the parts (with the exception of the TB/WP which the dealership is purchasing) from Tim at oemacuraparts dot com. Best prices I could find and he gave me a discount for being a forum member.
