Timing belt shredded
Timing belt shredded
Hi guys I got a 04 to with a shredded timing belt. Mechanics first thought was the fuel pump was bad but it was determined bit was a cam shaft sensor. Then he pulled the timing cover and found the belt shredded. Can any help me with a diagnosis
Was that original belt? How tensioner is looking? Does all pulleys turn? Does camshafts turn? Don't rotate camshafts too much. Is there a lot of oil on the belt?
I bet the damage was done to the valves, as you probably kept cranking the car trying to start it. With that many miles, take a look for used engines if you want to fix the car.

You can find a decent J32A3 for probably less than $1K. (Same as a TB/WP job at the dealer)
Have it installed, but have the TB/WP done while it's out to save trouble down the road.
Make sure to get a pre-2007 J32A3 because the bell housing changed for the 2007 model year.

The only thing that just occurred to me is that some mechanic thought it was a fuel pump. If he had the car and cranked the engine he sure heard the engine. If timing belt would be completely broken engine would make a distinctive noise (no compression). Maybe belt was shredded, but not completely broken - more like partially rubbed off. Maybe the engine is fine?

I'm just wondering how a timing belt got let go for 197000 miles. Now it will cost you a lot more than a timing belt job to get it fixed. That mechanic kept cranking the engine, rotating the crankshaft, which might have hit the valves up top many more times than necessary.
