Time for belt change?
Time for belt change?
While working on my sub install my friend noted that it might be time for a timing belt change. I don't know anything about them but he's had a honda and he said they need to be changed at 100k. My car is at 108k right now. What do you guys think? It looks like it has cracks in the picture but in reality they are surface fraying. I'm not sure the belt is supposed to be brown either.
Todays neoprene belts really dont show alot of wear like older ones. you have to look at the ribs to see how worn they are or if any are cracked. In any case that belt looks questionable. Those belts are cheap and easy to change so why not. And yeah you're getting close to needing a timing belt so why not just do al your belts at once along with the water pump, thermostat and coolant change. The accessory belt is an easy DIY project but as for the timing belt, based on your post I would pay someone. And not the guy that helped you with your audio install lol.
ditto on finding out whether your timing belt needs changing. How long have you had the car? It should be blatantly obvious when the computer pops up with its maintenance minder.
That serp belt looks thirsty. Replace it.

I'd say it's time to change that serpentine. Also, as you're right on the button for the timing belt change, you should do that soon but there's no hurry. At the same time do the plugs, coolant, tensioners and water pump, as Eaglegreen said.
It's probably time for both belts. I bought my timing belt 2 years ago so now when I replace it, it's already 2 years old. On the bright side it's been in the house so it's really not aging. I've had all parts for over a year now and I'm at 121,000 miles. It's no money out of my pocket, I'm just waiting to get the time to do it and for the weather to cool off. The bad thing is I've done timing belts for people on these cars for free but haven't gotten the time to do my own yet.
