"Tighten Gas Cap" light! 3 visits to the dealer already.

The first time we brought the car in, they said there was no problem and nothing could be produced. We brought it back a couple days later when the light came back on, and they said it was a gas cap.
The gas cap was replaced and on the way home, the light came back on.

The next visit they said the canister and purge valve were the problem, so they replaced it.

That was a week ago, now the light is back on a couple hours ago. It's Sunday, and my girl is sick of dropping the car off and picking it up, then filling up two tanks when she has to pick up the car. They may as well replaced the whole damn evap system. It's a damn pain to drive back and forth.

07 TL-S by the way. No mods, no nothing done to the car except tints. It's getting rediculous...is there anything I should do? We're about done bringing it to Mueller's dealer in Schaumburg, IL.

I seldom have this problem, and notice that this warning message appears especially if the roads are bumpy...

Its the actual threads in the filler pipe (at least in the case of my '02 RL)

That fixed it instantly

The actual pipe needs to be replaced, the threads are not perfectly round or whatever.

There is another post on this problem. I posted part numbers needed to fix this problem. My 07 TLS had this problem. When I took it in, the service manager called ACURA and was told what parts to replace.

they should be doing a evap test with the hds after any evap repair not just guessing and throwing a part at it and clearing the code and sending you down the road. 3 comebacks, thats BS!

you know what would be fun...

there are a lot of us having these problems in the schaumburg area.... we should all pick a day and go to muller acura at the same time. They can't argue with 5,6,7 people having the same exact problem.

Haha, but I think the above guy is right. It could be the filler neck. I'm gonna go and ask them to look into it...except we're kind of sick of driving back and forth. Plus, the 09 TL / TSX they give us is navi-less.

picking it up today

I'm picking up my car today... they say that they replaced the purge valve/canister. Hell, do you guys remember the day when you knew a fuel tank was leaking simply by the raunchy smell of gasoline??

The '09 tl loaner i got smelled like someone had smoked 50 packs of cigarettes with the windows closed. On the plus side, driving the '09 tl made me further appreciate my '07 TL-S. Did anyone else notice that when the high beams are on they're NOT HID in the '09? They're regular amber lights.

HOWEVER, i am jealous that the '09 automatic has 'sport' auto. U don't have to hit the paddles and it holds it in gear longer.

To all of you, there is a Tech Line Summary that just came out for this. Applies to 07 TL-S's. Remembered reading it last week.

I've copied and pasted it for you. Might want to have the dealership try this, if they weren't already aware of it and tried it.

Tech Line Summary Article
If the “Tighten Fuel Cap” message is displayed on the MID but the vehicle passes the Service
Manual troubleshooting, use the following procedure to check the EVAP canister purge valve:
1. Run the engine at idle with the hood closed for 30 minutes
2. Hold the throttle at 2,000 RPM and monitor “EVAP PC DUTY” with the HDS.
3. Once the duty cycle reaches 90% or more, monitor the FTP sensor for 60 seconds
4. If the FTP sensor reading reads about 2.50 volts or if it fluctuates rapidly between about
2.3 volts and 2.5 volts install a known good EVAP canister purge valve
5. Test-drive the vehicle for several minutes at highway speeds. If the fuel cap warning
message stays OFF, replace the EVAP canister purge valve. If the warning message
comes back on test the EVAP system for leaks. (vc-rt, sn, 7700)

I've had my 07 TL-S back twice to the dealer for this problem. First time they replaced the gas cap - problem persisted. Yesterday they replaced the filler neck - message light lit up on the drive home - but maybe THEY did not put the cap on right. Will have to fill it up and drive for a while to see if the message comes back on. I also prefer the 07 to the 09 loaner that I had. Some nice changes to the interior but overall I like the 07 better - just wish they would come out with a convertible.

I to get the same message on my 07 TL-S but it just goes away after i turn the car of and only happens once in awhile but I never got it before my j-pipe/cat-back install so i thought it was associated with that. Am I ok just ignoring it when it pops up every now and then? Or should i get this fixed right away?

am i having a pcv leak?

how bad can this get if i ignore it and reset the mid?

is this a diy?

how much is this if i take it to the dealer?

Tighten gas cap...

I had the same problem with my '07 TL-S MT. It took three visits to the dealer to resolve the problem:
First visit - I was told to do a better job closing the gap cap when refueling;
Second visit - The dealer replaced the gas cap after doing a complete fuel system test.
Third visit - I complained to Acura, asked for a loaner and told them I didn't want the car back until it was fixed. The dealer replaced the purge valve.
Fortunately for me, the problem hasn't reoccurred and it's been about a month.
I'm surprised you're still having problems after the purge valve replacement. Good luck!

Well I just purchased my 07 TL-S last friday and I have my tighten fuel cap light on. I went to the dealership yesterday and they reset the code and also done an EVAP test? Anyways they said it was good. I went to Walmart and headed back home, as soon as I pulled in, my "tighten fuel cap" message turned on. WOW....WOW....WOW.....if I knew that I would be having these little issues after paying $30K for a "certified used car" I would have bought a new car. Anyways....just wanted to vent a little.....So did everyone get their cars fix with this warning message?

Just got my baby back from the dealership and the tech said Acura will be releasing a TSB in a few days about this issue for our 3rd Gen TL-S'. They replaced the canister purge valve so hopefully this does it.

I've got this problem too. I took the car to the dealer for it twice and got the usual run around. I am now out of warranty. Can I still get this fixed for free?

I got the same problem on my 05TL. 3-5 clicks after refueling didn't help. Now going to drive it on highway for a while to see if that helps. Obviously the car is out of warranty and dealership is in a kingdom far far away and I don't like the new TL not even as a loaner

Got the tighten fuel cap light again today. I called my acura dealership where I bought the car and he told me to run the car through the weekend and see if the error persists. Even tho it's been 4 days and a full tank of gas since the first light came on (which I deleted the message in the diagnostics messages).

The light in the dash and the MID do not show the error anymore after I got out of the car and re-tightend the gas cap. The message is still stored in the diag. msgs' though. If it happens again I'm not doing anything with the gas cap and taking it straight to the dealership. This is BS. Haven't even had the car for a week!

Purge Control Valve (PCV)..........is this the same "PCV" on all cars that prevent oil from entering the intake from the valve covers?

Well, I went to the dealership today. They went straight for the purge control vavle and replaced that. I have only driven a few miles to work since they did the work. Hopefully the warning does not come on anymore!

I can verify, anyone who has this problem just replace PCV. Did it this weekend. Kind of a pain to get to that bottom screw but took all of 45 mins. I did notice that the defective old part was made in Mexico and the replacement part was made in Japan... coincidence? doubt it.

I had the tighten gas cap come on my 2007TLS twice in the past two weeks and with 57,000 miles they installed a purge control valve at no charge. Looks like a reference on the repair order to Service Bulletin 09-056.

Dealer said this would fix the problem....we'll see

I posted this fix a long time ago. (pcv stands for PURGE CONTROL SOLONOID in this case) Peeps gotta read the thread before just posting.

I got the same "tighten gas cap" dispaly 4 days ago. i also have "tpms system error" i dropped the car off at the dealership today to replace the faulty sensor. i told them about the tight gas cap" display, along with the print out of acurazine post telling them it might be PCV. after 2 hours later the mechanic said it wasn't the cap or the PCV but has to do with something clogged and emission problem. they don't know what's wrong with it and need to run complete diagnostic, need to leave my car overnight, and then tell me what needs to be fixed. the dianostic will be $187 plus whatever repair/part cost. i laughed and told them to just replace tire pressure sensor($175!!!!!). anyone know a good honest mechanic shop in houston near medical center?
