For Those with 3rd gen transmission failures??

What were the symptoms before the failure. I have an 04 with 57k and the transmission has been acting a little funny here lately. First, if I am in traffic and just feathering the gas it will shift very hard into second, kind of like its lunging into second. 2nd, and this just started, if I accerate at a normal pase when the car hits around 40mph I feel a shudder. Like the trany is slipping. It feels like I hit a row of five bumps in the road. I would take it o the dealer, but it is very hard to duplicate. Just a side note, in the 57K I have drained the trany fluid 4 times and used Honda fluid each time. any feed back would be great.
Thanks,
Brian

Well i had the same exact symptoms a month ago. i took it to the dealer and they tried blaming it on a bent rim that i had. so me like an idiot went and fixed the rim thinking it was that. so i fixed it and the problem was still there. long story short i got into a heated argument with the service manager which didnt want to fix or diagnose the problem and took it to another dealer. when i got there they also had another TL there with the same problem but they couldnt duplicate the problem on that one. lucky for me i knew how to duplicate it, because mine would do it at slow speeds when shifting for 3rd to 4rth(maybe you should give it a try). another long story short, that dealer changed my tranny and torque converter and problem was fixed. by the way i have an 05' TL

did you get the jet kit fix for it? the only time I had experienced any weird shifting was before I got the oil jet kit installed. since then, added amsoil and haven't had any issues "knock on wood." I'm at 66k right now. 04' model.

I am trying to learn how to duplicate it. once I do I will take it into the dealer. But, like you, i know they are going to blame it on my tires. So once I get new tires ( AGaiN) I will take it in.

I had my Vin checked, and there are no outstanding recalls.

Does the "lunging into 2nd gear" issue mean thats a sign of my tranny going out? My 04 only has 17K miles on it. Last night I tried taking off to merge on the highway, and took 1st gear to about 6k and went to shift to 2nd and it just grinded like a m'fucka. First time it happened, but scares me that the synchro's could be going bad already or something. I had a 92 eclipse that it wasnt normal if the synchros werent' bad...so I know what this feels like. The lunging into 2nd gear pisses me off though because I'm going slow and feather the clutch out and it still lunges and bucks....just frustrates me. I thought this was actually normal though?

Has this problem been solved by the factory? I have an 2006 with 7000 miles and would like to know if I should be on the lookout for an upcoming problem. Thanks.

I have an 05 TL 5AT supercharged and on spray. I have not seen one sign of a failure at all. If the tranny was bad on the 05's I would definately know. The only problem I see is if I run it from a dead stop hard, the T/C will lock up gradually until the oil cools down. It sucks cause it makes the car slower, but it also prevents the tranny from any problems.

If I drive it hard it shifts fine. My problem is only detectable when driving in a fuel saving manner. I am trying to learn how to duplicate it so that I can take a tech for a ride.

I just filled out the service advisors questionaire. My Acura service advisor wanted me to get everything documented in their computer. I guess this will keep me covered if the tranny does go out.

well when i duplicated i just pushed the pedal very lightly and let is get up to where 3rd was shifting to 4rth. with my problem i was able to hold the shaking of the car at that moment by playing with the pedal. it only happened at very low rpms when it was shifting from 3rd to 4rth, it just so happened that it was when it was reaching 40 mph so i knew when to expect it.

I think the 5AT is just not smooth at shifting on light throttle like someone said before. It shifts slow and sometimes jerk but on heavy throttle or WOT, it shifts fast and firm

I've noticed jerkiness from first to second in slow stop-n-go traffic too. I'm at 20K miles, so Ithink I'll get the transmission oil changed soon.

I'm just glad I shelled out the $1,100 for the Acura 100K extended warranty!

You just described what my car is doing to a "T". I Mine is a little strange in that, It won't do it when it is cold or fully warmed up. It will only do it if I have driven about 3 miles. Then I can duplicate it untill it gets fully warmed up. It won't do it when it is totally warm.

I have an '04 Auto with 61,000 miles

My tranny whines like a wind up toy and when it shifts at high rpms it would jerk really hard. Once while turning out of a lot, had the pedal about 1/4 way down and the car shifts around 3500rpms and it was so quick it chirped the tires a little.
This isn't normal right?

Yes, I'd agree. I notice the same thing once in a great while on my 04 Accord 4-cyl.

Just an Update: I dropped my 04 TL off at Acura service today and they confirmed my fear. my transmission is bad and is going to have to be replaced. THANK GOD I purchased the extended warranty. I really hope mine is just an isolated incindent.

Just as a side note, the 06 TL loaner they gave me shifts 100% smoother in every type of driving situation.

Well as I have posted here before, I'm not on my thrid tranny...
Needless to say, I'm very disappointed with Acura...

Well, my first tranny didn't really have any issues. The heat shield whine was diagnosed as being a tranny problem and so they replaced the tranny.

Then the second tranny went. One morning, I got in the car and put it into drive. The gear did not engage. I hit the accelerator and the engine just reved but I wasn't going anywhere. I got scared and put the car in reverse and again, the engine just reved and I didn't get anywhere. I then freaked out and put the car in park and stopped the engine. I started her up again and shifted to D and then the gears engaged and I was moving again. Then I came to my destination and put the car in reverse to park and once again, just revs and no movement.

And so I took her in to get the new tranny. My ordeal can be found here...

https://acurazine.com/forums/religion-politics-18/chalabi-iran-142644/

And so I had said that I'm going to be looking into Lexus for my next vehicle...Although that new 2007 G35 is looking mighty fine...But I'll wait for the 2008. I'm through getting first years of new models...like my 2004 TL...
