i just recently got a 2008 tl type s 22k miles. but i get some horrible local gas mileage. earlier today i was averaging 12 mpg. locally it ranges from 12-16 mpg. i dont drive the car hard at all nor do i turn on the AC. i pumped a full tank yesterday and i just been driving around locally not too much and my tank is already down to a little less than 3/4. whats causing this problem?

Is this what the car is telling you your mileage is or are you doing independent calculations?

car calculations. and my own estimations. cause i didnt really drive around that much and the gas has already went down over a quarter of the tank.

How far have you driven? What type of gas? Keep track of the number of gallons you put in each fill up

Have you checked your air filter?

City driving likes to eat up gas as well.

if your

city driving: ~15 if you push the pedal rev upto 3-4K rpm and then brake hard to a stop
city driving: 16-19 if you go easy on the gas and coast to a stop
highway: i do get 30+ mpg if am driving 70 mph....cruise control on or off doesnt matter !!!

in all, city + highway you should get 21-25 depending how u drive city and how many time you hit vtec

but yeah none the less:

1> change air filter
2> seafoam your car (gas tank/vac line/ engine case)
3> tire pressure
4> how heavy do u drive ? (do you have a 50" TV in the trunk all the time ? )
5> how heavy are your rims/tires...if you riding 24" dubs you are getting good mileage LOL !!!

i pump only premium gas. i driven roughly about 40 miles since my last full refill. when i accelerate i never hit anything higher than 3k rpm. usually around 2k-2.5k rpm. i have stock everything. i usually just drive alone or just with one passenger. highway i get about 23-25 mpg which i think sounds right.

So your real issue is just city mileage? I get pretty crappy mileage when I'm in SF - not much I can do given the constant stop and go, brutal hills, and general congestion. Even when I drive the 8 miles north on the freeway that doesn't help much with the overall mileage if I'm spending a lot of time in SF

yeahh just city mileage. i live here in socal 626 area. not much congestion and roads are flat. my mom drives an rx350 which consumes less gas than my tl-s. which doesnt sound right. are there any filters or any maintenance parts i should check out or change that would help improve the mpg?

Well, a fuel filter that you can't get to...

Technically, you can but it's not worth it.

It would really help to know what the MID says is the AVERAGE MPH- that is a huge indicator on gas mileage. I don't think a fuel filter will improve gas mileage- possibly performance though. My bet is that winkyyy's average MPH is less than 25mph which means it's idling a lot. When you idle and don't move you get ZERO MPG. Based on the highway MPG, I don't thing there is anything wrong with the car.

the average MPH on the car is like 14 mph. which is retarded. i don't idle my car for that long. only at stop signs, red light, and warming up the car.

today i was at half tank i drove about 20 miles and now im sitting at quarter tank. i did not use AC. nor did i accelerate to anything past 3k rpm.

^^^ idling doesnt kill the mileage as much as stop-n-go does !!!

This is the reason right here. I had the same issue, posted a thread for people to post their average mpg along with average mph and mpg follows mph perfectly. At an average of 14mph, 13mpg is completely normal.

Take the car on a long open freeway drive and you'll be surprised by the 30+mpg it gets.

^Very true. I was amazed at the highway mileage compared to city....14/15 MPG is normal for the TL-S....especially 6MT. But it more than doubles on the highway.

damnnn. thats a big difference. i always thought the type s did 18-20 city mpg. my daily driving is usually only city too. i rarely hit up the freeways. is there any way to improve city mileage other than going easy on the car?

wrong... idling is the biggest killer of mpg's.

idling = 0 mpg (you're not moving... just wasting gas)
stop n go = 12-16 mpg (less if you're racing redlight to redlight)

the fact of the matter is: in stop and go traffic you're still moving... if only a little bit.

Therefore, stop'n'go will always be better than idling.

I see anywhere between 14-19 mpg in dead city driving.....no highway. So that is normal. Highway, I saw 28mg so far. I still need to check my air filter and lately I haven't checked my tire psi. They are down to 32-33 per my dash, so I need to pump them up some.

try this:

reset trip: 1min (which will be 1 mile) at 60mph....1 minute idle....read your mpg
reset trip: 1min (which will be 1 mile) at 60mph....1 min stop and go....no idle...read your mpg !!!

will help u figure your car out better

yea city and highway driving is dramatic for me. I get 15mpg in the city and when i commute to school and work on the highway it slowly starts to jump in the mid twenty's. God i wish i did more highway driving lol.

Idle is that grey area.

You're getting 0mpg but you're also using very little fuel. You can't just use 0mpg in your equation or it will be artificially low. Using 1/3 throttle to accelerate 0-40mph over and over again uses more fuel in the same amount of time.
