Strange rattling from engine area on start up?

Hey guys, this morning on the first cool morning with the TL I got this LOUD rattling from the engine area. I couldn't tell if it was coming from the front or top of the motor but it was extremely loud and annoying. The rattling changed with the revs of the motor. After a 15 minute drive to work, it had stopped. I will go out again at lunch and see if it does it again. Any ideas?

this has been happening to me lately as well......
When the car sits for a while....I'd say 6 hrs...... when I rev the engine while the car is in park there is this annoying rattle/whine from the drivers side area of the motor, but after driving a bit it doesn't happen again......the problem is it's not consistant, doesn't happen all the time so it's kinda hard for me to have the dealer look at it.
And sometimes when I put it into reverse to back out of my spot a little bit of the noise mentioned above happens.
So I would be interested in finding out what this is all about....

This morning was the first time I noticed it, it is the first morning we have had the cool weather. One other thing I forgot to mention was that when I turned the steering wheel the noise would seem to get louder. But like I said, once I got to work the noise was gone.

the more I read on the forum, the more it looks like it might be an issue with the power steering pump.

Really?
why would it make that noise when I rev the engine? I was thinking more like it had something to do with the transmission or something......but then again.... I know nothing about the mechanic aspect of cars

I'm not even sure if it comes from the engine area.....it almost sounds like a heat shield might be loose and gives it a high pitched whining/rattle combination somewhere in the area when I rev the engine after starting it up.....and sometimes does it and sometimes doesn't, and it's very difficult to explain to the tech at Acura

I will try turning the steering wheel all the way to see if the noise is similar....

no, it really wasn't a "knocking". It really felt like a whine and got worse wheen turning the steering wheel at low speeds/rpm's. If it does it today when I leave for lunch I will probably take it to the dealer and let them look at it. The TSB below looks good for the possible cause as well.

First thing I thought...do you have a CAI? If so...check the positioning in the passthrough to the wheel well. That is often the culprit on CAI cars.

sorry, I am a TL newbie... What is a CAI?

It was the same thing this morning. Some kind of rattle and when I would move the steering wheel in either direction it would whine really loud. Again, when I got to work the noise was gone. I am guessing maybe the power steering system has a leak, bad fluid, or is just going out?

Does the fact that the whine only happens when turning rule out the TSB on the intermediate shaft?

Cold Air Intake

It sounds like your power steering, especially since when you turn the wheel the noise gets louder....have you checked to see if there is any fluid in there, or signs of a leak?

Thanks JamminTL, I should check that to see if it's making any contact.
But if it is making contact, wouldn't make that noise all the time?

Okay, I dont believe there is a CAI on there unless the previous owner put one on. I checked the fluid last night and the level looked good but it also looked kind of dirty. I don't know how much the fluid flucuates but I checked it with the engine warm.

Ha-ha....trust me you would know it was there if you had one....looks like this:

See the silver tube....that's an AEM CAI.

You still have a warranty on the TL, right?
If so you should make an appointment with the dealership by you to get it fixed as soon as possible before it does further damage. Just my thoughts.

Keep us posted, and good luck

HAHAHA! Yeah, I would have noticed that! Sorry, I am used to Corvettes, and the CAI for them is a little more subtle.

I hear a lot of talk about the different warranties for the TL but mine has over 75k miles on it so I doubt any kind of steering problem would still be under warranty.

HA...Corvetts are sweet....before I die I will own one....HA-ha
You should think about putting in a CAI.....the sound is AWESOME....

Never hurts to swing by the dealership, have them diagnose it and if it's not covered by warranty and too pricey for them to fix it go to a local garage and get some price quotes, Meineque or Midas might be able to do it......

yeah, I am going to have Acura take a look at it on Monday. I will drop it off Sunday night so they can do a cold start on Monday morning. Hopefully, it will make the same noise for them.

Okay, I had time before work to pop the hood and listen to it. I'm almost certain it is coming from the power steering pump. The rattle, almost sounds like a faulty bearing. Is the P/S pump on the left top side of the motor opposite of the air intake? That is where the hoses were leading to from the P/S reservoir.

The only thing is, it seems like if it were a faulty bearing or P/S pump it would not matter if the car was warm. Just like the other days, once I get to work the noise is gone everything runs smooth.

Im leary of dealers so I want to get as much info as I can before it goes in on Monday. I have a feeling once they hear it they will just want to start replacing stuff until the noise goes away.

Just got a call from Acura and it is what I thought, power steering pump is going out. The dealer said they didn't have a problem with me ordering my own parts so I got it from OEMAcuraparts.com and saved $100 bucks and only $90 to put it on so, not too bad...
