Steering wheel removal with rack and pinion??

I need to replace the rack on my car and the manual says to remove the steering wheel. For those who have changed it, did you remove it? I've seen many people replace them without taking the wheel off, and I don't want to unless I have to.

Also, the cheapest place that I've found to do the install was $500 not including the part. Is it worth paying, or should I just do it?

Thanks!

thats a big weekend job. I would recommend a professional. The steering column needs to be disconnected from the rack just inside the car. Remove the kick panel on the driver side under the dash, there is a cover that pops off and There is a small bolt to loosen. unscrew it all the way and then the column can be disconnected from the rack, and thats just barely a start.

The entire cradle has to be dropped to do this job. It's labor intensive and not a job for an average Joe. You can get yourself seriously injured or worse if your not that mechanically inclined. You will need another friend to help, you will need to support the engine when you drop the cradle. No simple task.
