Steering issues (o ring fix?)

I have some issues with the steering on my 2005 TL. I have read up and searched the forum and have seen the O-Ring fix on this car and it is something that I will be doing very soon. My car does make some pretty loud whining noises (that get loud when you turn the steering wheel) but the steering itself from a dead stop is often difficult, to the point where it feels like I might break something by yarding on the steering wheel too hard. Does a bad o-ring cause something like this? I haven't noticed any leaking fluid so I don't know if there's much air in the system and the fluid level is good. Maybe a bad pump?

Thanks, that's good to know. I'll get a hold of an O-Ring here in the next few days and pop it in and see what happens.
