Steering Column rattle: dealer giving up until TSB comes out...HELP!

First off, I love my TL despite the steering column rattle. That said, it is still unacceptable to me that a 35k+ car do that without a solution. So basically my dealer has told me they are giving up until Acura releases a TSB on the issue. This could take months or even years! My tech tells me there are only 4 reported cases across the country! BS! I can easily find 10 people who have had the same exact issue on azine! End rant! Does anyone have ANY suggestions on where to go from here?

So, what kind of rattle could you describe them?

go to the service manager and complain! The fix is to tighten the airbag screws as the come loose and can cause the noise.

Can you describe the noise? This could be what I have. Mine does sound like a small loose screw in the airbag area but not sure. It's a faint rattle coming from the center of the steering wheel.

csmeance, is this something that is easily fixed or would it be best to have the dealer do it? Is there a diy for this?

Just to a search for "steering column rattle". It's a pretty common issue. It varies from randomly rattling over large bumps, to constantly rattling over small highway expansion joints, it just depends. One thing for sure, it's REALLY annoying and should not happen in a vehicle of this price.

I had the same problem on my 07 Type S. I did a search here and found a fix and printed it. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it for me. The problem hasn't returned and I had it done nearly 1k miles ago. This place rocks!

Hey I was wondering if you could share those solution that you've provided to the dealer.

Sometimes I get those rattle, at first I also thought it was my keys or key rings, which I took off the rings, and still there...

I'd appreciate for your help.!

Thanks!

Update:

Well after picking up my car the other day, the steering column rattle mentioned above is gone! In fact, each time I've picked it up in the past, I've still been able to duplicate the problem by tapping the bottom of the wheel in an upward motion. This time I was NOT able to duplicate it and it has not rattled.

I'm wondering if csmeance is on to something and it's simply the airbag module screws coming loose over a period of time?

^ Glad you got it taken care of. Did you happen to find out what they actually did to fix it? Trying to figure out if this is something I can take care of myself.

Does anybody know a DIY for fixing this? I have exactly what spinxt was describing but don't want to open the steering wheel unless I know the fix.

If not, I'll just take it to the dealer to fix but I usually try to avoid that because it's always a crap shoot whether they can "replicate the problem". I already called the service manager I deal with and he's never heard of it so I'm less inclined to take it there.

DIY. Most dealers don't have the patience to fix it

Well documented and many attempted solutions.

It's not so much that the airbag torx screws get loose. They have way too much loctite for that. It's typically that you need to finesse the airbag assembly while re-tightening the screws. I had to apply upward pressure on the whole assy while re-tightening. A little black magic for sure. Others swear it's the ignition lock.

In another thread I said (links in the quote)
Well know and unfortunately difficult for dealers to fix. My dealer acknowledged it but then we went to 4 or 5 other new TLs on the lot an they all did it too. Dealer looked at me and said "I'll try and fix it but given they all do it I might just rear apart your wheel/column for to no avail". I really couldn't disagree with him at that point.

I ended up fixing it myself.

Hmmm. Seems like I need to have the dealer look at this. Was trying to avoid dealing with taking it in if it was a simple fix but without detailed instructions, I'm a little leary of messing with the airbag.

I had the same rattle, they said it was a spring in the airbag or some crap like that, they got rid of it though.
