Stealership Maintenance

I just broke 5K on my 2008 and the "A1 Service Light" prompted. I took it in for a good 'ol oil change and they wanted to hit me with a $105 fee for the oil change, tire rotation, fill fluids, check car, lights, blah blah blah....Anyhow, the price ended up being dropped down to $85 after I refused the rotation. So basically, I paid $85 for a freakin oil change and not too happy about it

I asked the lady if I could just come in for an oil change and she told me that the only way to actually reset the service prompt light and message off the dash is if I bring it in. Does anyone have any experience with what's needed to remove the service light on the dash? Heck, if I can save some extra $$$ in times like this, I wouldn't mind. Plus, I think it's an absolute price gouge to charge someone that much money for an oil change and hitting a reset button.

Thanks!

Ouch. But I think that's pretty standard for some dealers. The "lady" said come it because they want business, she just works there and isn't and expert and/or she doesn't know if you know anything and can't assume you do.

Unless something's new in the 08 (which it isn't) you can absolutely reset the light. Read your owners manual and it has all the details (yes, RTFM). Basically you go to the oil percent view in the MID and hold the reset button. It will then prompt you through the steps.

While you are reading the manual be sure to see what the other services entail so that you will be sure to do them one way or another (Dealer, Indi, or yourself).

Thanks for the advice. I'll make sure to look into that in the future. It would be nice if there was a sticky on alternatives to simple maintenances that can be done to avoid going to the stealership

$105 Are they crazy. I take mine to a Honda dealer for oil changes. Any Honda dealer will perform standard service work for you. Out the door cost for an oil change is $35. Plus the Honda dealer is 40 miles closer to my house.

do you really need a diy on oil change??? everything you need to know is in the book- start there NOW not in the future
It also has info on the traction control and abs brakes on your car- it will out-think you in situations and apply partial brakes to one or 2 calipers and/or limit throttle!-
the type of info you NEED before you set out on the road!!!!

Not a DIY on oil changes, but a sticky to how to avoid dealership gouging for simple maintenance. This is my first experience purchasing a new vehicle from a dealership, so I feel it can provide a lot of insight for first time new-car buyers

I just had an A1 done on my TLS and it was $49. Included oil change, tire rotation, top off all fluids and general inspection. This was done at Acura dealership.

You are getting ripped off. Go to another dealer.

OK, here's the real dirt. The dealership you went to didn't do anything wrong. I'm guessing their labor is somewhere in the $90/hr range. So the oil change is $30, the tire rotation is $30 and they "checked" out your car for about 1/2 hour. That plus some taxes and recycling fees, if your state has them, gets you to the $105. Could I do that all in my garage for about $25 ? Yup, could and do. I'd bet if you asked them what's an oil change cost they told you $30. If you asked what a "A1" service cost they'd have told you $105. I think that's too high and you could probably find another dealer to do it lower.

BUT if you don't want to, don't know how and/or don't have someone else to do it then what are your options? 1) Don't change oil ?, 2) don't rotate tires? 3) don't have experienced eye check over car? Sure, perhaps 3 is a stretch but you need to do 1 and 2. I'd say shop around. aceman4 had a good idea for using a Honda dealership but his $35 probably isn't going to get the tires rotated too.

But this brings us back to the manual that 01tl4tl and I told you to read. It has everything Honda/Acura recommends. Aside from broken or worn out parts it's all you really need to know about regular maintenance. Plus, I'll guarantee that you will learn at least 3 new really cool things the car does.

We are all more that willing to help each other out on this board. If it seems like we are roughing you up a bit it's only since you will be better off from doing some reading in your own.

lol what a freaking rip. learn to do your own oil changes
as for the maintenance button - just hold the reset button (for like 45 s) it'll come up to an options screen (orange back lit box on same "A1" screen) - click again to select reset option. Golden...
