Squealing sound when AC is on

All,

I'm getting a very annoying squealing sound when my AC is running. It can't be heard outside the car, but certainly heard outside. As soon as the AC compressor starts up, the squealing begins. Any ideas? Does the 3G have an air-conditioner belt, or does everything run-off the serpentine belt?

Thanks,
Ken

The drivebelt / serpentine belt drives the AC compressor. When the car is cold and off. Inspect the AC pulley, rub your finger across the groves and make sure they are sharp & smooth with no corrosion buildup. If there is corrosion, get a wire brush and try to clean off the pulley as best you can. Then check the housing to both the compressor and alternator and look for black belt soot and check the belt for wear / tears. Also check the play in the AC compressor pulley and alternator pulley.. make sure neither wobble.. if you feel play in the AC compressor pulley you may need to press in a new bearing. Relieve the belt tensioner and try to spin the pulley, does it spin freely? If it all pans out and the culprit isn't verifiable.. go buy a $5 can of belt dressing and spray the pulleys. Turn the car on and listen for any squeals.. spray some more while the car is on and the pulleys are turning until the squeals dissipate.. keep it handy and try to pinpoint which area is stressing the belt.. also invest in a new gates belt.. GL!
