Is this a sign of me needing new brakes?

I have been hearing screeching/squealing and metal scaping on my right (passenger) side rotors/brakes. It happens from various speeds as I roll and its light/feint when I accelerate and usually stops during braking but sometimes it still occurs when I am braking.

so I get home and take a look and this is what i see

i notice that little tab sticking out. does that mean my brakes are worn down? It is weird that only my passenger side does it. Or does it mean that some rust got in between the pads?

any kind of insight would help. thanks in advance

take your passenger wheel off and take the pads out for inspection.

Some aftermarket pads come with wear indicators on both sets of pads (2 per side) so if the outer pad's indicator isnt touching the inner one might be.

If you could...
take the pads out, rub them on a sandpaper and put it back in.

I see... and if I take out my pads, should i reapply any brake pad grease?

I would believe my pads are oem brembo pads. I haven't officially looked when i bought the car used. Its been about 2+ years. They have a hard initial bite and of course all the brake dust that the brembo pads do. within the 2+ years i owned this car, i drove from ~63k miles to about just shy of 79k miles. Im not sure how long these pads are supposed to last under "normal" use. I never had to stomp on it for emergency braking.

Just some more info to throw out there to make this easier hopefully for someone

Yes, that is the sound of needing new pads. I went with the Autozone Cmax Gold. Great pads with very little dusting and have a lifetime warranty. Don't wait too long as metal on metal contact will ruin the rotors.

if you don't nail on the brake alot then I would say the life expectancy for these pad are average 25-35k miles. I bought my car with 60k miles and pad replaced at 45k miles and the pad look almost new.

That is the squealer tab touching to warn you the pads are low. Like others have said, pull the wheel and get a better look at the condition of the pads. I got about 40k miles out of my Brembo pads. I switched to the CMAX Golds as well since I wanted less dusting and wasn't as concerned about initial bite since I rarely flog my car.

I replaced my brembo pads just short of 40k as well. They are quick wearing pads. Given the mileage your pads are probably due a 2nd time around and looking at the rotors there is a pretty good chance you'll need a new set as well. You have a pretty heft lip and likely they've been turned once already. Do yourself a favor and don't get OEM parts here. There are far cheaper good quality rotors and pads that wear better and don't cause so much dust.

i can see from your pic that your pads are worn out and it appears the "warning tab" is touching the rotor. It is there to let you know you need new brakes.
