Shift delay?

I read in another post to look for a delay in shift from p-d or p-r whichever it was.

I was just curious as to what exactly constitutes as a 'delay'? I test drove the TL today again and was shifting around from r-d, p-d and it did not take more than one second to change gears. So what is considered normal with a 3G? (specifically I was in an 06)

Thanks

I had my automatic TL for more than a year and ain't never had no delay in nothing. I would tentatively venture to suggest that your source is misinformed.

Sorry I think my post may have been unclear. What I meant to say was the user had advised to ensure that there is no delay. A delay would actually be abnormal.

So my question is, what is considered to be a delay in reference to the time it takes to change from p-d.

Thanks.

I still don't understand what you mean by delay. A delay in what? When you shift from p to d, your foot is on the brake right? So nothing should happen.

Umm.. I mean a delay from the the time it takes for the transmission to shift into D after moving the shifter there from P. In other words, the physical shift in the transmission from the time of the request. I don't know how else to word that, sorry.

As I said, I read here that it was a good idea to check for a long delay which may suggest transmission issues. Just looking to find out how long of a delay that would be.

Another example is that the tranmission on my 18 year old Acura Legend takes about 2 seconds (which is long) for the transmission to shift into D after moving the shift knob there.

off topic but when i shift from p to d or from d to r and vice versa the transmission takes ~ 1 sec to shift, but the car jerks a little meaning i can feel the shifting of the gears, is this normal?

the slight bump you feel is the engagement of the trans fully into the gear while stopped
1-2 seconds is perfectly normal time delay
If it gets to 3-5 seconds to engage- thats a trans prob-

I'd say mine takes about 1-2 seconds to go into gear. Most times I will just roll out of my driveway in neutral instead of using reverse. I loose momentum naturally by the time I get to the flat street. No need for much breaking. So when I go from neutral to drive, I get a slight delay, but never more than 2 seconds.

Just the response I was looking for. Thanks guys!

also you should hear 2 low thuds, which are the ABS system running a self test - when you first start moving

Make sure you are stopped fully before shifting into gear- much nicer on the trans

I was wondering about that. Although in my case it's more of a click than a thud, barely noticeable. Only happens the first time you start moving forward and it doesn't happen until you reach at least about 5 km/h.

Mine also takes about a second to shift into gear. I noticed it usually happens when the engine is cold.

Thanks for the tip! What exactly is included in a prebuy history? Is this applicable for Canada as well??
