Road noise TL

Is anyone else bothered by the amount of road noise in the TL? wind noise is very minimal which is great but compared to other luxury cars, the road noise is on the high side for the 3G TL. Anyone know where's the best place to dynamat to have the greatest efficiency for reducing road noise?

I've heard that most road noise comes from your tires.

Not sure what your set up is but bad or badly worn/super cheap tires usually have caused excess noise in my experience.

^^ This. I have my snow tires on now and my TL is quite noisy from them. When I have my Conti DWS tires on, it's actually pretty quiet. I was quoted Dynamat installation from a local installer near me- ~ $300 for all 4 doors. Usually, radio shops can do it. I would think doing the doors would result in the best noise reduction.

^DIY FTW! I laid MLV and CCF under my carpets. Deadened my doors, and put a layer of MLV and CCF between the door panel and the door card. Deadened and sealed my trunk and put dynamat on my roof. Total was around +/- $400

Of course, this was because I done a complete audio overhaul, but I will consider doing this "sound deadning" process on my future vehicles as well. Im happy with the results.

you really think the TL is loud? the cabin noise in the MDX is obnoxious. i agree with quanaman...tires usually the #1 culprit.

i know there are a few folks on here that have dynamatted their cars...perhaps they will chime in. i plan on doing this to the MDX (to the doors and the sub-it rattles). i might do this to the TL (the doors and the rear deck for the rattles).

Sounds like your tires are the culprit. The TL is relatively quiet IMO. I put Michelin MXM4 on my car last year and made a huge difference.

Tire plays big role, but more like a humming noise, annoying.
Can't blame the tires for the cabin noise...
If you have a 60$ tires, that's different
but cabin actually is loud.

When I drive my car after dad's FX, all I say is WTF is this
I think Mom's 07 MDX is quiter than my TL

Well it's not loud... I just think its louder than cars in its class. I have michelin PS2 tires so I'm sure they are not some $60 tires. I have had other tires on my car before, hankook v12, and continental contiprocontact. Continental being the quietest of the 3. I'm pretty firm on keeping the michelin ps2 as I love them for performance. I'm sure some sound deadening material in the right places would help.

I also have ps2's and they're quiet. Awesome tires

Did you get them new or used? I had a set of quality michelins I got used once and they were loud as hell. Must have been feathered or something

How many miles do you have on your car now? Any chance that you need to replace some suspension parts?

I usually replace shocks/struts every 70k.

I admit the michelins are slightly louder than the hankooks, which I bought brand new. But you guys really don't notice road noise? Like when I drive over newly paved freeways it sounds so much quieter I wish it could be like that all the time.

Just dynomat your car. I love those freshly paved roads as well but they are few and far between around here.

I can't hear road noise over the interior rattles. Sound deadening does do wonders but I haven't done it on this car, on a previous one. My exhaust is loud but I don't think this car is that bad with noise.

My TL is whisper-quiet compared to my other cars. I agree that tires are the first place to check, and add that "expensive" doesn't necessarily mean "quiet."

This is exactly why others have stated this is your tires. If the road noise changes on different road surfaces, that is your tires. Different tires transmit road noise differently.

Road noise? its always the tires, unless your have bad clunking noises from bad suspension or loose bolts somewhere. As tires get older and more worn down they will start making more noise. They will get louder and the only thing you can do about it is get new tires.

I barely even notice road noise anymore even with my winter tires on. I'm used to the hum of aftermarket exhaust but that's just me, my TL to me, is the quietest car Ive ever had, since it has no aftermarket exhaust and will most likely stay that way.

take the fender liners off, stick up sound deadenings all around.

or just spray a couple cans of rubberized undercoating per fender.
i did the spray cuz it was cheaper than raamat

it won't get rid of noise, it made mine bearable @ 1st coat
2nd, hmm okay
3rd, worth it.

hey it's like $10 for two cans.

Dynamat is for vibrations, not blocking noise. I stripped the interior out and used a little dynamat but 100% coverage on the floor with Second Skin Luxury Liner. It's a sound blocker and it works well. It's also heavy.

Wheel wells are a major source of noise. If you have a limited budget do the wheel wells front and back. The factory inner fenders have little sound blocker on the inner part. I'm replacing one of mine, I thought about adding more when I do.
