Rev limiter kicking in while driving?

Hello and thank you in advance for your help.

I have. 04 TL base AT with 125k. The timing belt snapped back in august at 75 mph (prev owner did not replace the timing belt correctly.) anyway, I got a really good deal on a used engine with 95k. The engine came from a manual vehicle.

The engine was installed and it runs fine. Except when it hits about 5500 in whatever gear it stays there. You can floor it and it just stays at 5500. As if the rev limiter was on all the time. I can hear VTEC kick in yo but that's about it.

The check engine light is on for catalytic eff below threshold. But it was on before the engine replacement. Any help or tips would be appreciated!!

I am having the same problem! I thought it might be the oil getting low or needed to be changed but after a fresh change it still does the same thing. I have 125k on the original engine. I keep up with all the required service, timing belt, tranny flush and ect. I have read all kinds of "it could be this, it could be that" Does anyone have a solution to this? No I do not have a check engine light on....

the acceleration pedal position sensor works in tandem with another sensor near the Drive by wire throttle.
if the two sensors dont match via voltage, the car will be sent into limp mode, or a protection mode. limiting upper or higher RPMs where damage can occur.

Yes while driving. this happens in 3rd and 4 gear. in 3rd it goes to 5500 rpms hits the limiter then shifts to 4th. I have an automatic btw.

only 3rd and 4th?
i doubt it's the app sensor, as it would affect all gears.
so, yes...any more information you can give us would be great.....
because we're still guessing.

no, if the app sensor fails, it would give off a different voltage, one that doesnt match the dbw sensor.
you could test the app sensor with a multimeter, however, I dont know the specific values.

Ok, I took a "quick" break from work... I can redline in first and second but not 3rd or 4th. Not enough room to red line in 5th lol.

i have searched everywhere and can not find a solution for this. I really really don't want to take my chances at the dealership and really don't want them hitting redline in my car.

Weird if it went into limp mode it limits rpm to like 2k so I don't think its that.

Dunno... Maybe try cleaning the injectors? I use Berry Mans total fuel system clean not very often at all just put a bottle in when the tank is almost empty and fill up with fuel. I'll put it in at the pump before I fill up so it mixes with the fuel.

Shot in the dark though, that's how they implemented the rev limit on the car is by cutting fuel to the injectors cheapest thing to try though

yeah but, he can exceed 5k in first but not 3rd.

I would think that the injectors wouldnt work properly for all gears.
same for the APP sensor.

if its only limited to 3rd and 4th gear...

Did anyone mention the 3d & 4th gear pressure switches yet?

I thought about that too just because I've been interested for a while to see how that would change the shifting my AT but I really don't feel like it is a tranny problem though. Why would the AT only let my engine get up to 5500 rpms?

Still lots of guessing going on. Bite the bullet and get the codes properly read.
Also the dealer doesnt have to red line it .. It wont go there .. You could do it for them.

So when I disconnected the battery overnight, drove to work, drove on my lunch break and then on my way home.....Problem fixed!! I thought it was kinds odd that I have to drive it 3 times before the problem went away. I know that was the case when my light turned on for the bad gas cap.

Thank you to everyone for your help and input!!

I hope this helps out someone else one day.

All you did was temporarily clear the codes by disconnecting the battery. The problem isn't fixed yet. It'll come back, it's just a matter of time.
