Removing Tint & Springy Door ??? [04 TL]

Hi A-Ziners,

I bought a TL a few months ago. The car has been a lot of trouble as the car lot dealer sold me a TL with a bad tranny and badly worn brakes . Long story short.. Acura replaced tranny.. dealer gave me good faith offer (1/2 price of replacement).. I turned all 4 rotors, flushed with Castrol LMA, and put on ceramic pads for 1/8th of Acura's estimate.

My problem now is I just went in for safety inspection and the tint failed. There's 5% tint all around. I also noticed the door makes a loud springy noise when the driver side window is down.

I need definitive tips on removing the driver and passenger tint. I have 5 days to take it back and pass inspection. I'm not going re-tint now, but does anyone know a good tint shop in Austin / Central TX??

Also, does anyone have any idea about what is causing the springy noise.. is it the glass channels.. perhaps the regulator damper? I'd like to hit two birds with one stone.. but tint first. Thanks!

? Tint's easy to remove.

Just get a razor blade and start making some slits and peel. Once you remove the tint, use Windex GENEROUSLY and scrape away the residual adhesive with the razor blade. As you remove the adhesive, it'll look like a ball of sticky booger. Just make sure you don't have any of it fall into the window tract/door and you should be fine.

Did you have the car tinted or did the dealers sell you a car with the fronts tinted? If it's the latter, you can make a case to have them remove it. Although I wouldn't trust anyone else to remove the tint other than yourself. Cuz no one else would care if the adhesive falls through between your door and screws up your window down the road. It's not "their" car.

use a hairdryer or heatgun to heat up the tint before removing...it will be easier...

also on the rear windows, using a steamer is best...but i suggest removing everything yourself...

let a tint shop remove the rear to save the defrost lines...

Fortunately the rears are okay and don't need to be removed to pass inspection.

The car was already tinted when I bought it so no luck there.

Thanks for the tips you guys!! Whoever did the tint did a good job and ran the tint past the felt seal. Any tips on getting to it? Anything to be careful with when removing the panels?

Auto stores sell tint remover spray. After pulling off the tint, spray that stuff on there and it will make life easier! You will still have to scrap the glue off with a razor, but it will be a lot easier to get off.

STEAM!!! the best tool for removing tint. i just did it last week. its the fastest and most effective way of removing tint. shoot steam on the tint to soften the glue. then slowly peel it off. the glue should come off with the tint instead of staying on the glass.

all i have to say is buyer be ware....be an educated purchaser when you buy a car...

now if the tint doesnt pass inspection, then i would take it back to the dealer and explain to them that the car you purchased from them has illegal tint on it and you need them to correct it...

Totally agree with the above on removing tint:

You can use a razor blade (no pre-heating) to scrape one corner of the tint to get a good finger grasp and then rip it all off -- very easy

Then -- use a two to three brand new razor blades (be very careful not to hurt yourself) to scrape the GOO away -- takes about 10 minutes a window .. then use GOO BE GONE to get the final remnants in the corners with q-tips or razor blades...

good luck

Wow.. a whirlwind of ideas.. razor blade and soapy water was all it needed. All your ideas were spot on though. I got so paranoid with all the posts about scratching tint and wind noise after tint.. I didn't want to get any glue or water into the assembly.. if it was my old accord.. no problem.

I was so pressed on time I asked Acura who they use.. gave the shop a call.. took it in after work and watched the magic. I took them 15 minutes to remove and re-tint w/ Lifetime Warranty for $70.. No problems..

On the plus side.. got to check out a GTR in shop.. I know what the upgrade will be..

funny thing is.. the springy sound is gone.. FTMFW!!

Thanks again for all the tips and advice!! Hopefully the thread will help out another.
