Rear license plate screwhole

Alright, this is pretty strange. I was throwing my new plate on my Type S, and I noticed that the two front screws went into the bracket fine. Cool. I go to put the two rear screws in, and only the left one went in. I'm using a standard license plate hardware for screws, 1/4-20 I believe. Anyway, the right screw on the top won't go in more than about one thread. It's almost as if the hole is smaller on this one side only. I've tried using some WD-40 so I don't have to force it, but no luck. I tried the next smaller screw from ACE hardware in both standard and metric, but they're too small and just slide through the threads and sit in the hole. Any ideas here? I'm still under warranty, and I'm thinking of just having the dealership look at it. I don't want to have to go to them every time I swap a plate or plate frame though.

The old screws from the dealer went into the bottom two holes. The new plate frame uses only the top two screws. For whatever reason, the top right hole is different sized, or there's a messed up thread in there.

Yeah considering the other 3 went in fine, I'm sure it's messed up internally. You think Acura will warranty it? I'm sure that would require a replacement of the entire back piece, with the Type S that meaning that back gunmetal color piece.

give it a shot, they should atleast goodwill it, its not like thats a part that is generally used so it shouldn't be considered wear and tear IMO, but u never know with the dealer

Just hit the hardware store and buy a three dollar tap. I had to do it to mine; it was cross-threaded. Dealer won't cover it under warranty anyway. It's not really their fault someone cross-threaded it at some point.

I might try to tap it before running to Acura. They said they'd look at it and maybe try to fix it, but stated that it was definitely not under warranty since the previous owner could have threaded it incorrectly. I figured I'd get that response.

anx, were you able to tap it to the normal size, 1/4-20? Or did you have to go bigger?

I actually had a similar problem but I tried to force the screws in and I accidentally broke the top bolts that you mount the screws into. So I just use the bottom holes now.

I just tapped them out to 1/4-20. I can use standard screws from hardware kits now. Top two are good to go. Thanks anx.

I'm having a similar issue only I can't get any of them to "catch". I just bought some "license plate" screws/bolts/nuts from Autozone. They don't require any certain bolt, correct?
