Rear Brakes Need New Pads/Rotors??

Hi All,

I have a 2008 Acura TL with approx. 60,000 miles on it. Driving home after work 2 days ago, I heard a scraping noise coming from the rear passenger side brake. Took it in to the dealer and they say I need new pads and rotors. They can't rebuild the rotor because it's damaged. Need to replace rotors.

Does this seem strange for the rear brakes to go before the front? There was no squealing that would alert me that the pads were getting bad. I take it in for regular oil changes and they never said the brakes look bad.

Is there a known problem for rear brakes going early??

They want to charge me $560 to fix the 2 rear brakes. My husband said he can get the parts for approx. $100 (after market) or we could buy the parts from Acura for $340 and he could replace them himself.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Go with some quality after market pads & rotors. Make sure to clean and lube the slide pins and back of the shims when installing if you or your husband is doing the replacement.

So was the scraping the wear indicator on the brake pad rubbing on the rotor, which damaged the rotor? The front pads usually need to be replaced much before the rears do. If the rears are wearing out fast you may have a caliper that is not functioning correctly and fully releasing the pad.

ask your husband to do the breaks they are easy to replace, don't let the dealer scare you. In your case the brake caliper seize up causing the scrape, replace the rear caliper cost around $300 for both side or your husband can rebuilt the caliper using the $21 rebuilt kit purchase from honda (for both caliper) the replace the rotor along with pads. I rebuilt mine earlier this year @88k miles since I notice the rear pad was wear unevenly from side to side.

You need to grease your caliper pins.

Resurfacing rotors is not really a good idea.

Get new rotors, you can buy a ton of different ones online. Since you are happy with the factory ones, any replacement will work fine.

The rears might go faster if the calipers are seized. Make sure they aren't! The rears on my TL wear faster bc they are slotted and wear the pad faster in the rears.

Buy the parts online and do the work yourself. Getting the rotor off can be a pain but it's not that bad
