Question Rattle Hunt

My 2005 TL developed several rattles after about 7K miles. The standard door seal squeaking was fixed with silicon spray, the overhead consol rattle was fixed by the dealer but they have not solved the rattle that I get from the driver side A/C vent. This is a plastic on plastic sound that is intermittent depending on road conditions. I want to take a look at the area behind the vent myself, but don’t know how to remove the vent cover. Has anyone taken the driver side A/C vent off of their car? If so, how is the best way to go about this? Thanks

How can you pinpoint the source of the rattles? my creeks seem to move.

gently pry the driver side vent from the top and the left side, the vent is held in by 4 retaining clips but is not bolted in.

I fixed the vent rattle by applying cloth tape (hockey friction tape from sport authority) on surfaces between the plastic vent and the vinyl dash.

Right now the only rattle I am really noticing in my car is one that is coming from the subroof. But it only rattles when the sunroof is closed. If it is open or in the flip-up position, there is nary a rattle or buzz. I'm going to have the dealer check this out when I go in for my next service.

This rattle was easy to pinpoint. Any pressure to the vent and the rattle stops. If I shut of the air flow to the drivers vent the rattle stop. I figure it must be in there somewhere.

I fixed my vent rattle today .. just pulled the vent out and then banged on the dash to get it to rattle and put a piece of foam between the inner large duct and the left side of dash.

Those are really annoying. I put foam in them and the creeks are reduced but are still there when going into driveways and stuff. You can't hear them when you have music on.

I may be one of the few that has no rattles after 20k miles, actually I had one that came from the sub when I had the BASS on 6, I took some foam and sandwich it between the rear panel and the metal support for the speakers and done deal.
I wonder if these rattles are obvious because our cars are so sound proof that the road noise is none and therefore we "hear" these rattles that would come unnoticed in other cars.
Anyway my wife complained that she had a rattle on her van coming from the passenger door, so I was about to take the door appart and found her lipstick in one of the pockets......

Tell ya what , the 03 Passat GLX I just traded in on this one was quieter on the road and after near 4 years it had less rattles than this one .

The one I have left now is a plastic to plastic clicking noise at low speeds and it comes frome something flexing in the drivers door right in the area of the door lock pin. I can stop it if I press on the top of the door with my hand or roll the window down just a smidge.

Did you notice the door card flexes and changes shape when the window is rolled up? Soon as it hits the top you see the door card flex.

"Irritate"??? LOL!! Kind of an understatement in my book. How did you fine them? What specifically, do you mean when you say window sills? I have creaking - or - rubbing, coming from above my left ear, but it's intermitant, so, it's the kind of thing that makes you want to strangle the designers at Acura.

It's pretty friggin sad that we have guys here at AZ, trying to "fix" their $30+K cars with tape.

That is more or less what I did to mine. 3/8 inch foam tape was applied to the back side of the vent where it joins the ducts, foam went between the large and small duct and on top of the small one. I also put cloth tape on the five tabs that hold the vent in place. It seems to work for now, no rattle.
