Radiator transmission line broke off

Driving today and bring my car to stop at red light. Light turns green, Press gas pedal, rpms went up but car didn't move. Smoke starts coming from under hood. Push car to Acura dealer, literally .5 Mile away. Red transmission fluid starts pouring on floor of service bay. Tech calls me and says the Radiator transmission line broke off and requires a new radiator because the metal line can't be welded back on. Cost over $800 to fix. What the heck is a radiator transmission line? I had no clue ATF goes through the radiator. Can't find anyone with same problem.

It's how the transmission fluid is cooled, it runs through the front radiator. You definitely could have just purchased a Denso radiator on Amazon for 150 bucks and had it installed.

So when transmission fluid pressure is lost a car can no longer move? ATF does more than lube the tranny?

Confused because I thought type2 coolant was in the radiator. So there are 2 radiators? One is filled with type2 blue, and the second is filled with ATF?

True! A massive fluid loss, will render the transmission inoperative.

There are NOT two radiators. The transmission cooler, is a part of, and contained inside the radiator, and is normally located, at the bottom of the radiator. Regular anti freeze Coolant, is circulated around, and or through, the transmission cooler, which cools the transmission fluid. Think of it, as a pipe, within a pipe.

What has been left unsaid in this thread is something like 99% of all automatic transmission equipped cars sold in the world, regardless of make or model, route ATF through a fluid to fluid heat exchanger in the radiator; just the nature of the beast.

Hello,

Is my model part of the 1% or am I not looking in the right place?

I've looked for the ATF heat exchanger on my 2005 Acura TL base but have not been able to find it. I assume the area in blue highlights the hoses that connect the radiator to the transmission. I've looked in this area before but could find nothing that resembles these hoses. I just got an endoscope and will check again this week-end.

You're not going crazy as the '04/'06 does not utilize the ATF cooler in the radiator.
It's the same radiator that is used in the '04/'06 M/T TL.
