Quick Brake job question

So, I just finished changing my brake pads and put everything back together and went for a quick ride. I am hearing a metal to metal contact in the rear, i put grease on the back of the pads. Is there something i did wrong here, I believe its only coming from the rear.

Also, when changing the rear i found lots of rust inside the caliper, have others found this happen to you?

Did the rear pads have 3 knobs on them? If so, the center knob needs to be filed off. What brand/type of pads are they?

Not sure what you mean by 3 knobs. Are you talking about the back of the pad. They are Hawk Street Ceramic.

I would think any type of water-proof grease would work. Just extend the piston caliper all the way out and grease it up a little on the outside, not too much so you don't risk getting any grease on your pads. And make sure you have a way of pushing the piston back into the caliper, a C-Clamp and a block of wood is perfect

Sorry, bad idea. Do not extend the piston all the way out or you'll certainly have problems as it will come out of the bore, and you'll not be able to "lubricate" the pistion as it is behind a dust boot and inside the caliper bore. The piston would cause no sound as it rides inside the O ring.

Usually lubricate the back of the pads and the pad side of the shims, or use an anti squeal lunbricant.

I'm an idiot Turbo. Sandals, disregard anything I say. I had always done this on my Samurai calipers, but never had to on anything newer, esp my TL. Which I don't drive the TL off into ponds, rivers, etc.

Yes.

And since they are Hawk Cermamics I can almost guarantee your problem is the middle tab/knob. It shouldn't be there. You'll need to file it down. (Only for the rear pads)

Credit goes to 01tl4tl for discovering this. Here's a post with the picture of the offending tab. Read the next couple of posts in that thread for the full explanation of the errant tab.

Click here for pic of Hawk Cermanic pads and read the next few posts
