Question about Honda/Acura MTF, hopefully not a duplicate...

Hey everyone. I have been looking through the forums regarding my 3rd gear popping out and had a question regarding the fluid change to fix it. I saw where some were using Syncromesh FM and then Honda came out with a new and improved MTF formula that was just as good. So my question is, is there anything on the bottle saying it's a new formula? I looked online and saw ones that simply said Honda MTF with the HG stamp but nothing about it being a new formula. How do I know if I am getting the new formula and not an old bottle? Also, is there any difference in the Acura MTF or is it just Honda in a different bottle? Thanks.

Acura MTF is the same as Honda MTF unless you want to pay the price differences, when you buy the Honda one make sure the label has green color on it. Either that or going FM Synchromesh like I did for both of the TLs, BTW I don't have any grinding gear or popping out of gear issue prior to the MTF replacement.

I would strongly recommend you stick with the tried and true ACDelco Synchromesh Friction Modified. One member has the latest iteration of the Honda MTF and says good things about it, but many dozens of members here are running the ACDelco MTF, myself included, and it totally rocks. Why mess with success?

Because I have read a number of negative reviews regarding the Syncromesh as well as positive.

The only negative review I've read, at least here, is one which claimed to cause damage to the transmission. The thing is, the parts the individual claimed were damaged are not found in manual transmissions; said another way, utter and complete B.S. If you know of any other negative reviews I'd love to see them.

Long story short, ACDelco Synchromesh Friction Modified is a proven cure for 90% of the cases of the third-gear pop-out issue (and probably would have cured the other 10% had it been used before the damage to the gearbox got too great).

Here is just one of the reviews elsewhere:

I have a theory about the GM stuff....
I've read countless posts about it. People saying stuff like "I switched to GM syncro and my 3rd gear grind was gone in a week!" And "This stuff made all of my grinds go away....you just have to give it about 500 miles."
I figured hmmmm must be good.
So I put it in my tranny that has absolutely no problems and what happens?? I get grinds in 3rd and 4th within less than a week!!
Switched back to HMTF and boom....No more grinds.
My theory is:
I believe that the GM trash actually covers up the problems in a tranny that is going bad and that it actually will ruin an otherwise good tranny.
BTW.....When I drained the Sycromesh out...It was a little milky. NEVER seen that come out of my tranny....even when I first got it from HMotors it wasn't like that.

Those links are from 13 years ago, ancient history. That and I was not able to determine if they were talking about one of Honda's V6 manual transmissions, or one of their other units. On this forum we are almost exclusively talking about the transmission in your car, and in that transmission, Synchromesh rules supreme.

OP - I you don't want to use it then don't. But know there are literally millions of miles on the stuff in various in TLs, Honda S2000s and other Honda/Acura cars. So it is kind of a "settled issue". Does it cure 100% of all 3rd gear engagement cases? No. Just a really, really, high percent. If you can do the drain and refill yourself there's really very little to lose than the price of the fluid. For me it was a total game changer. My 05 came with the original Honda MTF. I tried the improved that came out around 2006 (anything you buy from Honda/Acura now is that). Still had the issue. Switched to GMSM FM and bliss from then on out. Changed it several times since. Probably about 85K miles for me personally on the GM. (Yeah, my 05 still hasn't hit 100K).

OP seem like everyone already gave you input, there is no point arguing with other member.

If you don't want to use the FM Synchromesh then go with Honda MTF and make sure report back in couple months to see if it cure your problem. I would love to see a thread with report whether if a product work/ not work as intended that way it gave other users a solid information.
