Problems Shifting - VERY annoying

Let me start by saying my wife has this odd ability to break almost everything she touches, it's quite an amazing, and sometimes EXPENSIVE ability that she has.

She drove my car (2008 Acura TL w/NAV - base model, not Type S)to and from work one day. About an hour later, I hop in to go run some errands. I start it up and try to shift it out of park, but the shifter doesnt move at all. I didnt know what was going on. I did the old Nintendo gaming system fix and slapped it a few times. Didnt work. I read the manual and it said to stick the key into the slot next to the shifter, and shift it to Neutral and all this other stuff.

Basically anytime I want to drive anywhere, I have to start the car and then stick a screwdriver in that slot to get it into gear. And then when I park, I have to do the same to go from Drive to anything else.

I've read that maybe its the Brake Light Switch? But my brake lights still function normally.

I'm out of ideas, and I'm planning a Christmas vacation in which I'll be driving to and from, so I'd LOVE to get this annoyance fixed beforehand.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is it still under warranty? Take it to the dealer.

I'm honestly not sure if it's still under Warranty or not. I'm trying to avoid the dealer at all costs because I've heard enough horror stories about taking cars to dealers to get them fixed.

i would replace the brake switch anyway. its the least expensive and easy to replace. you could do it in your driveway. the break switch allows the shifter to come out of park when you depress the brake pedal so that would be my over the internet diagnosis. i would buy the part from acura, i dont know about in other parts of the country but here in texas electrical parts from autozone never work and oreillys is hit or miss.
