hm...i have the same issue, but i've already had the ps recall done. i wonder if i'm still applicable - the orange o-ring?

mine, if you rev, whines louder...but as many have mentioned, tends to go away once the cars been driven. only when it gets cold out.

hmm.. I don't think the noise increases with RPM but it could since it's belt driven, if it moans / whines when you turn the wheel lock to lock then it's definitely the o-ring. Many members have reported that their techs didn't replace the o-ring but rather reusing it when performing the recall.. Should be free to take the car back & bring in the tsb to have them put in the o-ring for you though.. or bite the bullet & buy the $0.60 o-ring & do it at home in less than 1/4 of the time you'd wait at the shop.

Power Steering O-Ring Replacement

Thanks for the great info on the Power Steering whining when it gets cold. Just replaced the O-Ring this evening ($2.00 @ Fletcher Jones Honda in Chicago----.97 cents everywhere else!!) One thing I didn't have was an offset 10mm wrench to get access to that bolt...that was $11 at Sears. So a 15 minute repair, less than $20 total, and not having to deal with a dealer. Priceless!!! Thanks to the poster that supplied the great pictures. Take Care!!

I'm having the same issue but they did the the power steering recall for me last year which is weird since I didn't have the issue over last winter. This winter I got the whine all of the sudden, guess it's time to get the o ring

PS Whining

I just replace it myself, not a mechanic, and works fine. Hard to believe that an o-ring causes that terrible noise. You will need a decent offset wrench to get at it...there is a great post on here with pics.

Take care

I can't believe this simple fix to such a noisy problem only cost less than a $1. I have been having this problem with my 06 TL for about 3 weeks now. I sent the car to the dealership on monday, but just came across this thread today. Ugh!!
I wish I had come across this thread earlier, then maybe I could have changed the O-ring first to see if that solved my noisy power steering issue. A price of $0.76 sure beats $600 anyday.
My only resolution to feeling better is my engine light came on this past weekend, so I thought the problem was a little bigger than the o-ring issue. The dealership still has my car, so I'm guessing there is some major engine work going on. Hopefully my extended warranty covers it 100%.

Has anyone had their engine light turn on after dealing with the power steering whine for awhile?

Unhappy Power Steering Noise Still there

Hay guys I changed the O ring, had the recall done, but I still have that haunting noise on cold starts, I've read some threads where it might be the rack, or the tubing, or maybe even the belt, any wisdom on this?

2005 Acura TL
70,000 miles,
stock . looking to customize once I get passed the p/s issue.

hm...so you had the recall done AND replaced the o-ring yourself? or are you saying that while the recall was being done, the o-ring was replaced? my dealer said that during the recall - they installed a new o-ring (bull). just because you had the recall done, doesn't mean they installed a new ring. are you seeing bubbles in reservoir still?

I put the O ring myself prior to taking it in for the hose recall this past week, I suspect it's the p/s pump, since I have a after market warranty and I got a refurbished p/s pump, (BAD IDEA), I suspect it's time to call Acura and see if they'll do a goodwill. Still Optimistic, after that If the problem persists, I'll just start changing parts.

So, i put in the new o-ring and the noise went away...mostly. When i turn the wheel from lock to lock it still makes a little bit of a whining noise. anyone know what this could be?

sounds like there's still a leak somewhere. Make sure there's not PSF leaking anywhere.

there is some ps fluid next to the resevoir but not anywhere on the pump itself. Do you think that it could be a leak in the resevoir itself or maybe a hose

Have to echo some of the other posts. I had a loud whine coming from my power steering pump that subsided slightly when things warmed up. It didn't matter if I was turning the wheels or not. I thought it was a bearing going out. Looking into the power steering fluid reservoir, I could see the fluid swirling, with bubbles on top. That led me to replace the O-ring on the inlet side (thanks to posts like this one) - which completely cured the noise. Total cost? 89 cents for the gasket plus power steering fluid.
