Power Steering Fluid Question
Power Steering Fluid Question
I was getting ready to leave on a long trip and was checking all the fluids. PS fluid was on the min line and the dealer is quite a ways from me so i went to Advance Auto parts and got the Coastal Honda Power Steering Fluid. I had to only add a little bit to bring the level to max line. My question is was it ok to use that or did i just make a big mistake. On the bottle it says for honda and acura vehicles. Thanks in advance for your input.
Honda PS fluid has a much higher viscosity than other PS fluids along with a special additive package.
There are a few non-Honda manufacturers that make acceptable PS fluids for Hondas.
I'm not familiar with Coastal, but if it specifically says "for Honda PS systems", then I think you're fine.

The Honda fluid is thicker and has more zinc than other fluids. The only aftermarket fluid I know of that's compatable is Amsoil but that's not to say there aren't others. If it says it's just for Hondas it's probably ok. With such a small amount I wouldn't worry even if it's not approved. If you were doing a flush I would be more worried.
