Pothole ruined my rim!! (pics)
Pothole ruined my rim!! (pics)
I just got these installed and hit a pot hole on the freeway, It was totally unavoidable. Has this happned to anyone with an Axis wheel and if so will they replace it under warranty?
Sorry to hear about your mishap. Unfortunately, it is not a warranty issue. The condition of the roads is beyond the responsibility of the wheel manufacturer. This is a very real problem with + size wheels and very narrow sidewalls. Most people do not realize how much protection taller side walls offer until something like this happens. What size wheels are they? 19 or 20 inch wheels on a TL is taken a chance.
warranty is about defect in material or workmanship- not covering what you ran into!
What you need is in the phone book- rim repairing,
those guys can straighten it back out and you wont be able to tell
a yahoo search for rim repair and my city name yielded 3 places nearby

there are rims repair specialist that can fix this, there is a cheap mway to fix it but it might crack it by using a heavy hammer and a 2X4 in between the rim and hammer, you will need the ire removed, I've bent my rims sooo many times I've given up paying to fix them, sometimes stock is better..........good luck avg cost to repair is about $200( remove tire, reshape, heat treat, reinstall tire, balance)
I think its funny people spend so much for big rims and I see piles of broken ones at all the tire places. The place i take the work van for service always has a pile of big broken rims in back.
They make the ride hard and loud, tires are real expensive, along with the rims, and I have seen cars that the wheels and tires were worth much more than the car itself!
Surely this is some well thought out scam to make people waste money on this stuff, as it slows cars down, and cant pay in handling unless you are on a real race track where turns are at very high speed and there are no pot holes.
I have seen cars lowered and with big wheels that could barely be driven on the street, and wonder what is up with that, just for looks, as they cant go fast except on very smooth roads, forget speed bumps and driveways, not to mention snow, pot holes, water, etc.
I once watched a lowered pickup truck try and fail to get up a driveway into a drug store, something my stock TL did without problems....
Is it just being a slave to fashion?

Hubby had the same issue with his bbs rims... we were on the freeway and hit a big pothole on the freeway which should've been fix due to the size.... we sued the city got the money for new rims... either that or they might give you enough money to repair it.... but it wouldnt hurt to ask... you should also take pics of the pothole for proof before they end up patching it up... but it will take a while to see that check.... took us 6 months... -_-;;

Yup, the way to do it here in L.A, at least in the produce area by Alameda and downtown is to talk to a city rep and explain what happend, then take pictures of the pot hole, and the damage, at least the people i know have gotten a check cut out to the amount of the wheel's cost and the tire too. Give it a try, no need to sue or anything, just make a claim
I looked into some places that can fix the rim, Wheels America and Tru Wheel. Has anyone ever heard of these places? Both of these places are here in L.A. and btw the pothole I hit was on I-10 onramp from the I-5 south on the right lane.
Oops

Does any one know if the same thing like this would happen if I go over some railway tracks? Or does potholes do the most damage?

you can def get a bent rim if you go over tracks... thats why you're supposed to go 15 mph at RR crossings... or be cautious..

I never had experience with any rims bigger than stock. I currently have 18" x 8" BBS rims but I still need to find tires for them. I was originally wanting to get 225/40/18 tires because of the rubbing issues I will get with my low offset rim. But after what I saw here, do you think going 235/40/18 would be better protection for the rims?

I also have 18" chromes.
That looks very familiar as I have the same wheel which had gotten bent by a pothole on the same side, too! Damn! Talk about a coincidence! LOL Are yours Hyper Silver or Anthracite? I can't really tell from the pics. Mine are Anthracite to match my car.
After I had gotten mine fixed, I hit a storm drain and re-bent the same wheel. So, be careful with it once it's been repaired as it won't be as strong as before. I took a piece of 2x4 to the bent area and hammered it down as much as I can.
And I didn't go after the city since they were hella ghetto and I'd never see a penny of it.

I have the Hyper Silvers. I'm also a lot more cautious, L.A. is full of potholes.
