Phutt Phutt sound from the Drivers Side Exhaust

Hey everyone, I tried searching but to no avail. After a car wash last week I was wiping some left over water drops off the wheels, so when I reached the drivers side rear tire I hear this weird noise coming. The best way I can explain this is that it sounds like the sound I mentioned on the subject line at a pretty rapid rate. I’m wondering if there is a leak or hole in the exhaust system on that side or not sure what the deal is. Has this happened to anyone else before? I’m taking the car in on Monday morning but as usual I’m afraid that they will tell me that “the sound is normal” . Let me know if any of you guys hear this sound or what you think the diagnosis will be. Also getting the sunroof looked at because it sound like someone is shaking coins over my head and it’s irritating. The last time I took it for the sunroof(2 weeks ago) the guy put some kinda grease and said that the lining was dry but that never took care of the issue.

Much appreciated
Cheers
S

I believe the driver side muffler has a flange and bolts to the rest of the exhaust...what you are describing sound like either a hole in the exhaust or the flange is leaking.

take it out the highway and crank it from 0-80.....seriously, that cleans out the exhaust if carbon or whatever has built up........could be some crappy gas too.....

mine does that too.....it seems to just be a characteristic of the car. Kinda sounds like it has some crazy cams in it, but really quite....like put put put put....its hard to describe.

mine does the same...in the shop now and that;s one of the things they are looking into...opon dropping the car off, one tech took a look and thought it was abnormal...called another one over and the other tech said it was normal for 06s, but did not give a clear explanation. told them to please describe exactly what the noise is and why it is happening

It's an evap purge solenoid, a part of the emissions system. I haven't heard it on my brother's '05 personally, but I bet it's the same thing. 2G TL has it, too.

It's normal. Not an exhaust leak.

Yeah, from the driver side, just by the rear wheel? The purge valve isn't on both sides; just that side. That's why you only hear it on the left side.

There is another one in the engine compartment, and you will probably hear that, too, when it's cold out and you're driving quietly or something.

I didn't hear it on my car for a long time, then one day I suddenly noticed it as I knelt down to do something by it. I just never really noticed it 'til then... but now that I know it's there, I hear it more often.

Have you checked w/your dealer, I don't think you should be hearing sounds like that, you should hear nothing but the purr of the engine.

Hope it is.. i just dropped mine off at the dealership and the guy was supirsed when i had him go listen to it. The loaner i got was the exact same car as mine and even the milage was in the same neighborhood. the first thing i did was to check for the sound when i picked it up and there was none and even after i drove it for about 20 miles to work i checked for the sound in the parking lot and i still don't hear it. not sure what to think.

06 loaner makes that noise but my 04 doesn't

i am currenlty driving an 06 TL for a loaner. I stopped to get my mail today and I heard the noise you are all talking about. it sounds like a really small helicopter behind the left rear wheel. It caught my ear because I have never heard anything like that on My 04. and I have had my 04 for 2 years and 50 thousand miles. To be quite frank, I am glad mine doesn't sound lie that. I think that would drive me nuts.

Yea.. i had another 05 loaner and at first i did not hear anything but after i did and the guy said that(As mentioned by one of the members) it's the EVAP system. He said it usually starts making that noice after the break in period. To your point it does drive me nuts.

2 other issues which i complained about when i dropped it off the first was the sunroof rattle which by some chance did not make the noice when i took it over but the guy over there kept the car overnight cus they could not find the noice on the first day BUT they found it the following day and said it was the "drip panel" which was making the noice and the part is on order...

The last issue was the rear deck which was rattling badly and they said it was a defective subwoofer and that was replaced and the vibrating is now non-existant.

Funny you should mention it. Every Honda/Acura I've owned has made this noise. Started with a '97 2.5 TL, '02 V6 Accord, and my '05 TL.
