Paint Flaking Off of 18" Gunmetal A-Spec Wheels

I got a killer deal on a set of 18x8.5 Gunmetal A-Specs from a guy off of Craigslist in late July. All of them were in great condition, only a few scruffs here and there, typical considering he had them on his TL for 75,000 miles. This past Saturday I was washing my car and paint started to flake off of 3 out of my 4 wheels. The paint isn't coming off where there is minor imperfections are either, it's coming off parts of the wheel that look cosmetically perfect. Granted the paint is flaking off towards the edge of the wheel, but if that part of the wheel never touched anything that would remove the finish, why the hell would it just flake off?

I know that I could get touch up paint, I've seen the threads covering which paint to get and such, but I was hoping I wasn't the only one dealing with this situation. Could normal wear and tear from the last ~5 years make the paint just flake off?

I'll take some better pictures tomorrow and post them up, but here's one for now. Yes it's a shitty picture but it's the only decent one I have. I didn't reduce it's size so the flaking would be seen easier. Also, this wheel I'm posting up is the better of the 3. Please excuse the terribly drawn circles around the flaking areas.

^But it isn't. That's what I thought as well, but as I rub my hand along the area, it isn't rough whatsoever.

Here are some more pictures that I took yesterday on my iPhone. Look at the lip of the wheel where the paint is missing, but also look above that area where it's closer to the inside of the wheel. It's losing color and it flakes off as well.

I never thought about that. So do you think that the newer paint is just flaking and peeling off and the original gunmetal is now showing?

How annoying but for $500, I couldn't pass these up.

From the pics you posted it looks like there is another color under what is flaking off. Making it seem as though whoever did the refinish didnt blast/prep the old finish off.

Ive had this happen with a set of powder coated wheels. They left the original finish on the wheels and coated over that. Of course...it eventually peeled when unmounting tires.

^Yea I'm sure that doesn't help whatsoever. I'm hoping to have them powdercoated by the end of the year
