Paint chip on hood

I had three rocks hit my car on the highway one of them hit my windshield and its got a scratch on the windshield and i have a pretty bad chip in the paint on the hood. It happened like a month ago and the spot that it was chipped is getting rusted. Anyone know a quick fix for the chipped paint?

Sand it first and use some sort of anti rust before painting

Its rather small but yeah I agree tape it off, sand it, anti-rust coat it, and touch up it. Its simple.

I have small spots like those my hood, I used a Nylon Fiberglass Scratch Brush to get the rust out and then touch it up with touch up paint.

So take out the rust, get some paint from the dealer... procedure on how to apply the paint properly? I don't want the paint to come off in the car wash or later on.

Awesome vid showing how to do perfect touch-ups. Though we don't drive classic Porsches, so it's up to you how meticulous you want to be.

Thumbs up

Vlad, that video is amazing. I wish all tutorial videos were that straightforward and informative (even giving examples of what they used). Definitely adding that to my "TL" playlist on YouTube.

Thank you!

The paint itself is anti-rust. Just make sure to clean up the chip before painting it so that the paint bonds properly.

Okay I got the rust out using a sand pen that I ordered and I also went to a body shop that quoted me at 350. He said he would need to sand everything around the area and re paint it. - which I might do later on...

The question I have is now that I've removed the rust using my sand pen, the next step is to apply some touch up paint in that area. If rust grows back will it begin to re-appear on my hood or will it eat up underneath and go downwards? The body shop guy said if I don't repair it, its going to start to grow and once its too deep then it's impossible to repair and I would need a new hood. So I just want to make sure doing that after I do the touch up job by myself, what would be the direction the rust grows in. Because what if it continues to grow underneath and I wouldn't notice it, but if it re-grew on my hood then I would just take it to my body shop.

The paint will stop any further rust. Like I told you before, for the peace of mind just spray on some rustoleum and then touch it up with paint.

I don't know how dinged the rest of the front is, but I had the front end repainted and put a clear bra on there. So far so good and you can't tell it was repainted at all.

Amazon has some DIY material that could work too.

That's actually crazy, that video is exactly how I learned how to repair paint chips at the body shop I worked at. The only difference is we used a drill and stuck the pencil in it, we also broke the pencil in half so it wouldn't wobble in the drill, this allowed us to burn perfect circled of completely rust free metal showing then we filled it with paint mixed with clear coat just like that video, leveled, and buffed. For getting out rusted paint chips we used 500 grit or 800 grit, all depending on how bad the rust is. For your chip I would suggest using 500, then fill the cavity with paint/clear, block it down with 1000, check it, do a final blocking with 2000, 3000, a cutting compound, polishing compound, then wax.

I'm actually about to do this to my car soon, I have TONS of rock chips, previous owner did a LOT of highway driving, it would be easier to just respray but I'm broke right now so I'm going to do it with a $15 touch up pen from Acura and the supplies I already have laying around the shop.
