I have a 08 Acura TL TYPE-S 6MT (ENGINE BONE STOCK), I had the P0174 code come up on mine a month ago after disconnecting the battery then went away after a few starts. I have about 115K on my baby. All of my fuel trims are showing the engine running lean. Two service guys at the Acura Dealership are saying I need a Valve Adjustment, didn't even realize that could cause a lean condition. Let me know if the Valve Adjustment works for you.

Appreciate the feedback. Richie from RV6 reached out to me and explained his pre cats do not produce neither one of the codes listed, he said they would throw oxygen sensor codes, so i already figured that wouldn't be it, plus i noted that there were bone stock cars throwing the same codes.

At this point the dealer isnt even sure, they were just now speculating and im not trying to throw money and this and that hoping it fixes the issue, im taking it now to a master tech who has worked with honda/acura for close to 30 years, if anyone can figure this out, he can.

If it does come down to a valve adjustment ill let you know and if it works.

It would be nice if you can ask the dealer what exactly they did, i have an 07 type s with both codes and a CEL as well. I changed all 4 o2's and disconnected the battery and it goes away but comes back a short time later. My car is completely stock, no modifications anywhere. I have heard that a possible intake leak can trigger these codes and a cel. A friend of mines did the valves adjustment a few weeks ago and i took the car to Autozone to get a reading and it came back with reprogram powertrain control module (PCM) not sure what it means.

Yeah this code can be a pain, thankfully my car already passed inspection before it the code came back. It comes and goes on its own, its annoying as hell lol. The dealer didnt tell you what they did? theyre are supposed to do an ECU update first, then work their way on to other diagnostic steps.

I messed around with the defoulers on my pre cat deletes but it didnt help, i figured it wouldn't as ive seen people with bone stock TL's still throw this code. I dont wanna go around just swapping and buying parts because thats expensive and it doesnt fix anything!!

Go back to the dealer, show them this. Ask them if this is one of the things they tried. which dealer did you go to? i went to paragon Acura on Norther blvd, they were great. Got a 2017 RDX loaner car while they had mine.

03max6spd , What did Paragon in Woodside did to fix bot CEL? Thats what you should be asking them, or are you saying you had both cels come and go, then you passed inspection? I also threw this code 3 days ago, cleared it and it hasn't come back , although I have not been using the TL that much, and I don't think it is the defouler at all since my car is stock. Does valve adjustment fix this issue? BTW, I would not trust Paragon, they are the worst dealer ever in the trip-state area. The worst Acura dealer by far. Those people are crooks.

They didnt fix it, its back on right now lol. The procedure as per the service bulletin is to do the Ecu update first, so they tried that. i got the car back, two days later the code popped up, i brought it back and they had it all saturday. said they needed more time to work on it, so they gave me a 2017 RDX.

Rocked that around for about a week or so, i went back got the car the code was gone, they said a valve adjustment should fix it, as they did a smoke test and tested the oxygen sensors to make sure they are operating properly, but they werent 100% sure on the valves, and i wasnt trying to spend $800 on something they werent sure was gonna fix the issue. I drove the car around, it was fine no codes, i went to check the monitors to see if the car was ready for inspection, it was. Did the inspection passed, and then a few days later it popped up, around last week thursday, friday? came home, turned the car off, went inside, came back turned it on and it was gone. The code comes and goes on its own, sometimes its just P0171 sometimes its P0174, sometimes its both. My biggest concern was passing emissions which i did, so i dont really care about the code now lol. Plus im getting out of state plates so i really wont care now, BUT i am going to have my friend who owns a shop in queens village adjust the valves for me over the summer to see if it will fix the issue. If it doesnt then i really dont know what the hell else it could be.

I also had no issues with paragon, they were very nice, informative, gave me a break down of everything they tried, called me to give me updates all that, even have free bagels and snacks

Try contacting Paul - he is a vendor here , and he works out of his home in Clifton, NJ. Nice guy and he will give you good pricing on the valve adjustment, unless you have a hook-up in queens village, then go to them. But ask him since his prices are very reasonable.

I've read sometimes, valve adjustment fixes this issue but if you think about it, I don't know how it fixes the issue since the valves are not that far off anyway to cause a very lean condition.

paragon is ymmv, but largely they are crooks, if they see an opportunity to steal from you, they would lol I have so much bad experience with them in the past from car buying, to service, parts, etc.. I've never been back to their dealership the last 8 years. lol

I appreciate the offer! my buddy that owns the shop has actually fixed this issue with i believe it was a honda pilot or Odyssey, i forget. but it was throwing the same codes, he pulled the valve covers and everything off and discovered the valves were out of spec. He said he would charge me 250-300

Oh daaamn that sucks, good thing i dont have to go back. Overall my experience there was very good, but ill keep away lol.

Well the valves deal with air, so i guess something is doing something it shouldnt and the car is detecting too much air flowing, idk though.

The car drives great, idles so smooth i forget its even on at times lol, Only thing that sucks is the MPG it is absolutely shitty for these cars, even after swapping the plugs!!!

this is good to know, I also have this problem and was thinking to do a valve adjustment since I hear the valves on start up and warm idle , but our engines are suppose to be on the noisy side to begin with. I am not far from queens village, I used to go to RpmNyc during my rsx days.

Oh wow my friends shop is actually like two shops over from the car wash lol. Yeah i know Rpmsnyc, drive past them sometimes, a friend of mine named Hogan used to work there. dont quote me on the price though, the owner of the shop is a very close/best friend so my price may be different than anyone elses, However he will not charge you 600-700 or anything near that price haha.

But hes very familiar with the honda platform, he used to be heavy in the honda scene, then someone stole and gutted his rsx -____- after it was recovered he was so angry he got rid of it and everything honda, now hes got a black G37 s coupe 6MT
