Orange Peel

Orange peel is defined as "An irregularity in the surface of a paint film resulting from the inability of the wet film to 'level out' after being applied. Orange peel appears as a characteristically uneven or dimpled surface to the eye, but usually feel smooth to the touch."

In other words, a defect in the paint that looks like the skin of an orange.

In bodyshop/factory enviroments its usually do to the settings and air pressure of the gun that was used to paint the car. If you did it yourself it could be the same thing or more likely, the temporature/humidity at which you were spraying. 70F and 50% humidity is optimal for automotive paint. Much higher or lower and you run into problems.

With that being said, if this sound like your problem and its from the factory you usually can get the dealership to cover the costs. If it was a re-paint and its from the bodyshop, take it back to them and they should make good for it. If this was from a job you did yourself, in mild cases a fine polishing compound may do the trick. If its really bad you may have to sand it smooth with 1000+ grit sandpaper and respray the clear.

In any case, thats what causes it and how you fix it.

Sincerely,

-Mike
