Oil Pump Seal

Owner of 08 Tl Type S. Dealership charged $1300 for replacement of seal. Mileage 108K. I just had 4 months ago the 105K service at a cost of $2100. When the timing belt and water pump we're replaced could the service technician notice anything wrong with this seal or do you not get near the oil pump when this service done?

I was a happy first time Acura owner...until now. Who can afford to shell out money for stuff like this anyway?

Whoa thats an insane amount of money the dealership charged you for the 105k service. and $1300 for a seal replacement is just ridiculous.

I'd suggest finding a reputable Honda/Acura independent shop or another dealer. What did they replace in the 105k service and was the $1300 just the oil pump seal?

In no way should it cost so much to maintain a low maintenance car like the TL.

Can you be a little more specific? Was it the crankshaft oil seal (#26) or one of the o-ring/gaskets on the oil pump (#3) or oil filter housing (#12)?

The oil seal on the crankshaft is easy to replace after the timing belt is removed (during the 105k service).

The part numbers are 91212-R70-A01 (26), 15115-P8A-A02 (3), 15825-P8A-A01 (12), and 15221-RYE-A01 (6) on the exploded parts diagram.

Less than $35 in parts and 10 hours of labor!

My guess is that the #3 seal was the leak, and the others were replaced as they had to be removed to get to it. In fairness to the dealer, when #3 leaks , it usually shows up underneath and behind the oil pump housing. Most of the timing belt job is done from the front (passenger side) of the engine. I usually notice them when doing an oil change. I'm seeing more of these after the second timing belt, at 10-12 years, and 200,000+ miles. It's rare to see one leak as early as yours. Even though it may not be the dealer's fault, I can't believe they won't goodwill a good chunk of it because most of the labor is a repeat of what they just did. Personally, I think it probably was leaking to some degree and they missed it. It would be really odd for it to go from no leakage to a point where you'd notice it in that short time.

The oil pump seal requires removal of the TB, and how that cost only a fraction of what you paid for the whole TB job is crazy. Find an independent dealer if you cant DIY.

My go-to shop wanted $900 for the TB and related things. I did it myself for $300.

They probably noticed the leak, but wanted to double bill you like they did and inform you 3k miles later. Also the oil pump leak is usually very minor.

I charge 550 for a timing belt. Oem parts and coolant . When they changed the timing belt they should have seen a bad seal if it was leaking. To change the oil pump seal you need to remove the timing belt, oil pan, pick up, and oil pump. $1300 sounds like they're installing new pump also.

Man I found out the same issue today.... With mine it is just a seep but no leak so far. Very annoying considering I just got my T belt service around 101k right now I am sitting at 108k. Not to mention I have other future expenses that is going to come up like new tires, brakes, power steering pump possibility, lower control arm bushings. This car is becoming more and more costlier. Hopefully, by end of the year or at the beginning of next year I'll be trading or selling the 06 TL.

They said they will have there engineer look at it if more people call and give them your vin number as well. Goodluck hopefully we get resolution on this expensive repair.

How many miles on your TL. Mine has been leaking for over two years. Dealer wanted like $1600 to repair.....leak was very minor so I just keep an eye on it and it has never been a problem. No drips on garage floor and never down when I do an oil change. I can smell oil burning if I am just running car but not moving for 5 minutes or longer and can see some oil build up under engine over a couple of months, but no way am I paying that much money for a few drops of oil every few months.
Car currently has 210,000 miles. Problem showed up around 150,000 miles.

My 07 TLS 6MT has 145,000 Miles it also started around $130,000. You should call them since your experiencing the same problem. Your call matters on resolving this issues. I really think they should have recall that oil pump seal because of premature wear.

I went in yesterday for a state inspection at my local dealer on my 2007 TL Type S. I've had it for a year and I'm just shy of 85,000 miles and they're telling me my oil pump has a leak that will cost $1200 to repair. I spent the extra money on a low(ish) miles Acura hoping I could avoid having to shell out money on this kind of thing.

People! It doesn't matter what kind of car you drive. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EXTRA MONEY IN A SAVINGS ACCOUNT FOR MAINTENANCE ON CARS! That way you're not visiting the back room of Joe's Crab Shack, selling one of your kidneys on the black market to pay for car repairs!

I'm pretty certain I'm on this boat and with only 59.5K on the clock. However I'm bundle long the 105K service with the seal leak repair to hopefully bypass any future costs.

2100 for 105k sound about right, i just hope it include tbelt water pump tbelt tensioner drivebelt spark plugs and valves adjustment, most of the shop outside will only do the easy part which is tbelt and waterpump but not valves adjustment

valve adjustment was actually the most difficult part, for me...but mainly because I'm a fool and forgot how the spark seals were supposed to sit and I ended up damaging them three times before I got it right.

that's way overpriced! i got my shop to do the valves for 285 and the timing belt/wp for about 600 labor only. parts i supplied were about 200-250.

That sounds about right...
Valve adjust sucks balls. Not even shaven or after a shower.

05 TL with ~220K. Noticed significant oil seep when changing plugs (after I dropped a strut stabilizer nut), got underneath and saw the oil pan and passenger side frame was wet with oil. Since timing belt service was due, hoped it was one of the cam or crank seals. Shopped around locally and found one of the two area Honda dealerships has the best price on this service at $750 out-the-door for timing belt, tensioner, water pump, drive belt, crank seal, and coolant (ironically, the other one heavily promotes a $599 'special' that immediately goes to $770 with taxes, fees, and tensioner added in, does not include crank seal). Two cam seals were another $150 installed (opted regardless due to age of car). So about $900. Got the dreaded call that the oil leak was indeed coming from the oil pump O-rings, that added another $450 to the total cost (package price for several other related things including oil pan seal). But that also includes an oil change (which it needed) and he said he'd rotate the tires as well. $1,375ish out the door for everything mentioned in the OP from a few years ago at $3,400 (actually $1,225 without cam seals) by Honda tech with Honda parts. Maybe this helps someone.

BTW, car still drives as solid as it did new. 20 miles to work each way (about 75% highway) still average about 28mpg on mid-grade gas. Next to my 22 year old Honda mower, most dependable thing I've ever owned.

My 08 TLS with 80k had the oil pump leak, it was due to a bad o-ring. I think i paid like $1500, this included the timing belt and water pump changed and while they were in the same area. Fixed the oil pump.

the oil pump seal is a very common leak. I would sell these repairs for about $1500 including the full timing belt service. Happens on a lot of Honda/acura. Mine is leaking right now. Just a drip. Acura won't do nothing. It's a seal that goes bad. Wear and tear. The manufacturer will always say to go to the dealer and have them look at it. It's routine. Then they will say there is no goodwill or coverage.

Hey, I was in the same boat… The only difference is I knew about the oil pump seal leaking and still decided to go ahead and do the timing belt package (Timing belt w/ Tensioner, Drive Belt, & Water Pump: almost $900 (w/ 3yrs/36,000mile Warranty on work completed)). Today, I am getting the oil pump seal done with another dealership. The dealership called the other one where I had the timing belt package completed and asked did they notice a leak? The other dealership stated yes, but said it was a seal instead on leak (they didn’t think they needed to tell me though).
After all was said and done,( the dealership where it is at now for the oil pump seal ), is writing me documentation to provide to Acura About the other dealership knowing there was a leak and they didn’t notify me of it. With that being said, this dealership is giving me a goodwill credit towards the oil pump seal price ($1200) and will be seeking reimbursement from the other dealership (approx $650). They told me not to worry about the reimbursement portion.…
now with that being said, this is definitely rare and should not be expected however one big recommendation that I do have for you is to keep any and all paperwork of work that was completed to your vehicle since you bought it!! (IT WILL HELP YOU OUT)

Then they'll likely charge you around $170 for the diagnosis, credited back if they do the work. Paul, our star master mechanic herein Nawth Jerzy, is doing mine next week along with the timing belt/water pump job - I'm sure for a lot less.

That's why they're called stealerships!
