Noise from underneath

When I leave my car for a whole day/night, start it up and drive-and-turn or reverse-at-an-angle..I hear a one-time noise from underneath the car.

I would position the noise source to be towards the driver side but not right below the drivers-seat. Maybe between the seat and the front bumper.

It doesnt happen everyday..but at least 3-4 times a week.

Its a 2005 TL and has 43K on it. Its been 3-4 weeks since I bought it.

Does anyone else have this issue? I'm wondering if this is the same topic as described in here :

not specific enough.. could be mounts, CV joints, tranny, wheel hub, brakes..

describe the noise as best you can. Try to reproduce it as best you can and tell us specifically, like... Is it only when the car is cold?? Give us the outside temp.. Does it only make noise on full tilt turns?? Is the sound is a creak, whine, knock, grinding???.. Can only hear it driving and not while it's idling??.

Frequency : Only once a day and not every day. Sometimes in the morning and sometimes in the evening.

Temperature : Less than 20F

Speed : I would start my car and just turn and be at 0-10MPH

Description : The moment I make the turn..I hear a noise like someone hit my chasis with a little hammer (from underneath). Feels like the noise comes from somewhere closer to the driver side than to the passenger side. It doesnt matter which side I turn.

Its been cold all thru Feb and I've had the TL for about 3 weeks so far..so I did not have a warm day yet..to prove that the weather has part in this.

I dont hear it while driving or idling or even while making regular turns. It only happens the first time I turn. And again Like I said above..its not everyday.

That doesn't sound good. I'd get your ball joints and cv joints checked out asap. Otherwise it's coming from your steering column / rack.. which sounds more like the immediate culprit. Any noticeable difference in steering?

I can steer fine it drives very smooth.

The dealership is looking at my rattles tomorrow. I will have them inspect for anything weird/obvious.

Well before you drive over there.. when you get to your car, rotate your wheel dead right and move forward a little bit.. listen for metal grinding / creaking. Then go reverse and move back a little bit and listen.. do the same on a full dead left turn. If you hear metal grinding then that could indicate your cv joint/s are going, but if there is no leaking or the boots are not damaged then it could just be the cold weather is hardening your boot grease. The boot grease is designed for high temps not low temps. From what I could find the spec rating for boot grease is around 0-5F, so in the low temps it can harden and may make the CV joint 'creak' when cold, but should go away when warm. So do the test on a cold start in cold temps.. then try again after driving a while.

Allright. Will do that first. I wonder if the CV joints can give away so early but not sure how the previous owner drove it.

Tomorrow is a warmer day here so I should be able to run the warm test.

park your car outside on the street and in the morning, first start of the day, pull out of space at less than 5 MPH. Pay attention at 10, and 20 MPH. Do you hear the noise? Does the brake pedal feel slightly odd? This is the ABS self check clunk/flap/flutter that is normal with the TL.

I have similar problem.

Whenever I want to leave from a parking spot, especially if I haven't drove the car for a few hours, and if it's cold outside, and I'll turn my wheels all the way, like locking angle, and reserve, and that's when I hear a clicking clicking weird sound coming out from the wheels.

And there's a feeling like the wheels are going over bumps.

However, the surface of the floor is flat.

Have any of you guys notice this before?

This started just recently, before Thanksgiving '08.

By the way, mine it's a CBP 07 TL-S, automatic.

Never happened before.

georgegiorgio - Thanks for the description. Thats exactly how it happens on my TL.

BTW - I got my car back, from the dealer, today. They were supposed to fix my rattles and the burned out bulb on the heated-seats switch.

Guess what. After keeping (or working on) my car from 8AM-5:30PM..I find out the the dash rattles have become worse and the guy did not do a good job aligning the Alumimium trim. Did a screwy job overall.

I talked with the manager and he asked me to come back tomorrow and promised good results. Lets see.

I know rattles

I know rattles coming from underneath the steering-wheel.

I took my TL-S and have the dealer put a special tape fixing the rattle coming between the plastic and the metal.

However, the B Pillar rattle need to replace something that the dealer are out of stock.

Trust me, you gotta bring your TL to the dealer and have them work with detail, and test drive several time.

I know some TL has driver-side-vent rattle, mine doesn't have it, but I still told them to put those special tapes just in case.

But, one possible rattle from the center speaker area, I haven't told them to put those tapes, cuz, I wouldn't want them to remove too many parts, besides, I don't have those rattle.

I'd wait til it warms up. It could just be your CV boot grease becoming stiff in the cold weather. Wait til mid-March / April, when it warms up, and see if the problem persists.

That's not your ABS.
That's your rear brake pads being stuck to the rotor becasue the tension applied via the e-brake.

I left my TL for 3 weeks after a little slush driving in the winter. When I pulled away, I left a 2 inch skidmark becasue the rears brake were locked so hard.

I have exactly the same noise on my 2007. Since the beginning. I have it for 2 years now, and here in canada it's cold. So if i let the car few hours in cold temperature, i never put the e-brake. I can hear the noise you describe, for me it looks like an abs check thing , but due to cold weather you hear it more or the noise seem special.

I have a similar problem as the OP. At cold starts, I hear knocking noise as soon as I make a left or right turn. After it warms up, I don't hear it anymore.

This started happening as soon as the cold weather came around. Are you guys sure it's the cv joint grease? Should I get this checked out by the dealer?

Note: I have innovative motor mounts.

Had the dealer check this issue yesterday and they found nothing.

Probably because they could not reproduce it. Its been warm here this week and I havent seen that noise come back.
