Post New Jersey Inspection Failure

I tools my 06 Tl in for NJ inspection and failed due to exhaust based on a computer read out. Any techs out there know how to resolve this issue?

This is as vague as you can get.

Is your exhaust modified? If so what?

Do you have a CEL you've been driving around on?

Did they tell you what the code was and what you would need to do to pass?

If you gutted your cats and are failing due to an O2 sensor readout, there are simulators or modified bungs that can help the car pass.

Need more info to give any useful answer though.

NJ was sniffing tailpipes 30 years ago. Isn't that still the case?

If you've mucked with the emissions systems (cats, etc), put them back on and go through again.

No, my car is strictly factory, unless some dealer screwed me but that is another post for another time. They said that they stopped doing tail pipe, and now it is done by computer read out...

There are no diagnostic codes that printed--my report says "OBD failed" - "based on the information obtained from the On-board Diagnostic (OBD) system, the system is not ready to determine the status of the pollution control system on this vehicle"

God I WISH Florida still had vehicle inspections. They stopped doing that down here in the 80's. Needs to start up again, there are so many death traps on the road its not funny.

..ON the other side...at least my car looks even better next to a ragged out POS Saturn...

Did you have the battery disconnected or the CEL cleared recently?

I heard through a family memeber that just had a car inspected this month that NJ is doing away with all State Inspections in 3 months to save on money. This was dirrectly from a NJ State MV emploee.

They will only be doing away with the mechanical part of the inspection, but because of the dense population emission testing is Federally mandated, but have changed the exemption to vehicles up to 5 years old and newer. This in itself is a rediculous criteria, as we will have about 170,000 miles on our 2008 knock around vehicle, while the TL accumulates only 6,000 miles per year:

the computer has a system to prevent people with CEL ck engine light ON ..
from clearing it and any codes by disconnecting the battery..
then going for inspection

Smog machines know this trick and interrogate the car for stored data-sounds like your problem

It takes about 2 weeks daily driving to get enough data stored in the system for it to tell the smog machine that its good for testing

there is a way to speed it up the learning-about 45 minutes
ck your owner manual (I only know gen2 method)
several speeds and times, accel decel variations

since all cars sold in the usa must carry as 5/50 on main smog parts, there is no reason for them to be tested earlier than 5 years
Anything that would make it fail smog test is covered by warranty
some emission parts even go to 80!!
ck your owner book

in Hawaii- they look for major rust thru the floor,, but dont smog ck
