Mysterious Beep While Driving?

Hi Everyone,

I did a quick search but didn't see anything, hopefully this is not a old topic. I have a '06 w/o nav.

This started to happen a while back, maybe 2-3 months? Memory is hazy. Once in a long while I'd be driving and I'd hear a 'beep.' It's not from the radio (I've heard it with the radio on different stations) and no idiot light from the dash and no messages from the MID when it does happen. This beep sounds like something you'd hear when the tire pressure is low (as I've had this recently.)

This happens maybe once a week or every other week. It's happened while I'm driving on the highway, city roads, and winding up a parking garage. I've gone through all of the MID screens after a beep but haven't seen anything. I've also turned the car off, then back to the ON position to see if any of the idiot lights are out but that doesn't appear to be the case either. I *think* it's tied to the radio volume but I wouldn't swear on it.

Any suggestions on what I can try next besides having my hearing checked? Does the dealer have a computer where they can plug it in and see a error log that the car generates?

Thanks!

no "door open" indicator on the dash or anything that might be a bad switch?

Stranger73, is your phone fully charged when the beeping occurs?

Motorolas give a single beep every few minutes when the battery is low.

evnash: no, no door open indicator, nor any indicator at all. Dash looks normal. MID is white and no idiot lights.

Will: not sure if the battery on the phone is fully charged, but I have a Blackberry that's been linked since Jan of 2007 and I haven't heard the beeping till now. And when this does happen, it is a single beep, then nothing, rather than a beep every so often.

Thanks guys.

I don't have the Bluetooth stuff (I've got an '04) so I'm not familiar with any sounds it might make, but might it be the car losing track of the phone then finding it again?

Is it consistant at all? Try turning the phone off maybe and then see if the beep comes back

If it's the door switch it might be triggering when going around a corner, but it could be so slight that the MID doesn't have time to react, just a quick beep.. but that's more like a chime I guess =/

Dude, if you've got an '04, you've got bluetooth. It's been in these cars since inception of the 3G platform. My 2004 is NAVI but even the non-Navi '04's had bluetooth

To the OP, the beep is probably your NAVI. It does Beep before she/he tells you the turn by turn stuff. If you have the volume of the turn by turn turned to far down, you may only hear the Intro BEEP itself. Try turning the volume up on the speech and see if your problem isn't related to that. To resolve, simply turn your Navi's voice OFF completely.

used: no consistency that i am aware of. not sure what a door chime sounds like, so i'll have to open my door while driving and see. j/k. at least two of those times i was on straight city road/highway... i guess it could be the door, but it would be the vibrations knocking the sensors off/on rather than turning the car?

ndabunka: no navi.

thanks guys. almost relieved that it's not straight-forward... almost.

It very well could be your radio/head unit. I have noticed on numerous occasions in numerous cars that I hear a sound that I usually associate with my cell phone or another electronic alert. I almost always listen to cds so a quick rewind will invariably duplicate the sound. You have trained yourself to hear this sound and, when it is part of a song, it sticks out.

Decaf?

I have owned an 06 for the last two years but have never heard a mysterious beep other than when turning the radio up when Radiohead or Smashing Pumpkins is cranking.

The seatbelt warning is the only thing that comes to mind. Check it out.

thanks for everyone's replies...

dejavecu: i usually hear it on the radio, and it's come up in the middle of a song, an ad, and news programs on NPR.

Blackcura: huh, i will have to check that out re: missed call. Pretty sure the sound came from the car though, not the phone. my phone is quiet enough i do miss calls while driving and listening to the radio, but that would also mean that it's quiet enough for me to not hear the one beep that comes up after a missed call.

jesstzn: my phones don't beep as it goes in/out of coverage, don't think the car does either. and it's one beep, then nothing. once every couple of weeks.

cura: while driving, i unbuckled quickly just to see what happens. (rolling start from a red light.) there is no beep, just a red idiot light on the dash.

thanks again, everyone! it's a weird problem, i know, and i can just about guarantee it's not me going insane, the wife heard it too. she's been calling me crazy the few times that i brought this up, then one day she was in the car when it happened. ahhh, sweet revenge... i'd give that up though to know what's causing this!

I know this suggestion is a sacrifice but drive without your radio on. I am sure you would notice this cause but the alert for gas has caught me a couple times. Good luck and cheers for sweet revenge.
