multiple cylinder misfire help
I recently bought an 08 type s 6mt and love love love the car although I am now getting a cel for multiple misfires and codes for misfires on cylinder 2 4 and 5. I pulled the coil on cylinder 4 swapped it with cylinder 6 see if it followed. I do t have a solid cell but it would flash at idle then dissapier upon acceleration. The coil I pulled from cylinder 4 looked not burnt but a bit brown where as cylinder six did not. I did not pull the spark plug I will be doing that tomorrow. But as of now I’m just wondering on any thoughts anyone else may have. Thanks guys.
Just an update this morning. I haven’t done leak down or compression tests just yet. But I did get a solid cel and still cylinders 2 4 and 5 misfire. If it is an over rev condition wouldn’t I b experiencing more then jut a rough idle?
^no.
short story short; I over-revved and only felt the misfire at idle...at speed, it's smooth sailing.
But that's why the leak down test is so important. It will AUTOMATICALLY tell you if you fucked the heads.

It sounds like a simple bad coil to me.

You've narrowed it down to either cylinder 2,4, or 5.
Just buy a new coil and change them out one by one until it's fixed.
In my case I had cylinder 3,5,6 misfire.
I thought for sure it was cylinder 5 that was bad because that's the first one to fire according to the firing sequence.
The firing sequence is 1-4-2-5-3-6.
I thought with the coil being bad in cylinder 5, it would make sense to trip and make 3 and 6 misfire also.
I was wrong. My bad coil was cylinder 3. Replaced coil for cylinder 3, all back to normal.
I didn't play around with "lets play a game of moving around the coils". Waste of time to me because I know I already need a new coil, might as well buy a new one and switch it out one by one.
You have a 1 in 3 chance of getting it right the first time, then a 50% chance of getting it right the second time
I guess if you already switched cylinder 4 and 6 and still have the same codes, that leaves you with cylinder 2 or 5.

Thank you guys for the help I will test the coils. Then do a leak down if the coils are fine. Nfnsquared I haven’t I’m positive of that I’ve only owned the far a few moths. Now the previous owner I couldn’t tell you unfortunately.
Ive had same problems and culprit was a bad fuel pump.. a fairly cheap and easy fix. I was unfortunate and spent $$$ due to incompetence of few mechanics i had seen, whom suggested to replace coils and sparkplugs, and diagnosing for bent valves and blown headgasket and having readjusted valves.
So I haven’t gotten around to doing a compression or leak down test I did pull the coils and number 5 had a fair amount of oil in it unfortunately. I plan on doing the tube seals and valve cover any chance that’s my main cause thanks guys.
Ya that could have been bad. Although the oil in that spark plug well still needs to be taken care of and I’m still getting misfires. I’m hoping it has something to do with it being all over the coil. But a valve adjustment and tube seals and valve cover gaskets are in my future.

i would recommend you to check with your mechanic if valve adjustment is an absolute must because it hasn't really done anything for me.. just my 2c
